I really like reading this file and I learn alot from ya'll back east and south east (and Canada and other parts of the US, for that matter) but there's not enough about Colorado in here. So hope ya'll don't mind a note for COLORADO FISHIN 1997! (and surrounding areas/states) The only place I've been so far is the South PLatte River outa Lake George Colorado. Our Blue Mesa (Gunnison) Colo trip in April for big browns got snowed out. Out annual Mothers Day trip to easten COlo for Catfish, crappie and white bass was postponed so we could get ready for our trip to Glen Elder Kansas for BIG! catfish, crappie, and white bass the end of May. The trout fishin on the S. Platte is just pickin up. Up until last week, we had to work hard for one brown trout in an afternoon or morning's timeframe. Two weekends ago, we hit the river in at 5pm, and at about 7pm the browns came out of their hiding places and started feeding. Between the three of us, we caught and released 7 browns and 1 rainbow, the largest about 13". Felt good on an Ultra-Light with 4lb test. All taken bumping crawlers along the bottom. Rampart Range Res. hasn't opened yet, to my knowledge. The Peak Res. are open but I'm not hearing much about them. Unfortunately, Spring run-off is about to start, screwing up the rivers and creeks for awhile, but the mountain and high-country lakes should be open soon and and before it gets too hot..out east should have some some grate fishin this Spring. deadhead

546.1 | TROUT at 10,000 Feet | SPECXN::BARNES | Tue May 20 1997 11:00 | 15
Threw a bubble and fly, some cheap mass-produced white thing, into a couple of beaver ponds at 10,000 feet this past weekend. Saturday evening, a hatch of tiny black "ice flies", I call 'em, were out and the trout were leaping totally out of the water after them. Didn't think I'd do much with my white fly, but managed 3 small 10" brookies and lost several more and saw large swirls just short of the fly. Sunday evening was much cooler, no hatch and no rises, but still managed a 12' brown and a 12" brookie, nice fighters! and later on a smaller 10" brookie. All released both nites. Run-off should screw this up in a couple of weeks, side note: saw a golden eagle pair feasting on a canada goose Monday morning driving back.. deadhead
