543.0. "Gates Pond" by WRKSYS::LASKY () Mon May 05 1997 17:55

Has anybody ever fished Gates Pond. The pond sits in between Hudson and
Berlin MA. I'm just trying to understand if you need a special permit
to fish there and is there any fish to fish for?? The place is a
great place to walk around or run but I almost never see anybody
fishing it, which is surprising. Anybody out there in noteland know
    what the story is??

Fished Gates Pond? Not that I'll admit to. Gates Pond is/was Hudson's
reservoir and has been closed to fishing for at least 30 years (which royally
annoyed those of us who lived in Berlin.) It's a beautiful spot, but has been
strickly off limits. When I was there it was plain there was no fishing
allowed, but whereas you didn't notice the signs perhaps things have changed.
You might check with the Hudson water dept...

Years ago you could see the bait fish teaming in the water and the word
in the ball-yard was that there were some lunkers in there, but who knows for
sure;-);-)

I wonder why they do that. Kenoza Lake in Haverhill was the same
thing. They actually had a lottery for a one time fishing trip in
Kenoza a couple years ago though.

Lake Massebesic is Manchester's drinking water, yet they allow fishing
and boating in it. You just can't touch the water with bare skin in any
    way.

The silly part about it all is that the dairy cows from farm on the west
side of Gates pond use it as a watering hole. I'm still trying to figure out
how they teach the cows not to use the pond as a toilet;-);-)
