532.0. "cod fishing info...." by STOWOA::MCNULTY_M () Tue Feb 11 1997 14:59

    I'm interested in doing some cod fishing from the surf down on Plum
    Island soon and was wondering if anyone has a tips that they would like
    to share??? Such as::

  1- Is it still to early to go now??? I think I remember something about
      the cod being close to shore when the water is real cold...

  2- Is the legal limit 15" Is there a limit??

  3- Type of bait to use?? Clams??? also is Surfland open this early??

  4- What type of rigging should I use?? Is the basic cod rig o.k.

  5- Is it better at nite or daytime???

    Seeing I don't have a boat, I'd like to try from the surf. (need
    something to do before the stripers show up.) Thanks in advance.

                                                        Mike

    The rec size limit on cod is 20".

    I would try in 20 or so years if the feds can rebuild the stocks. I
    haven't heard of a cod being caught off of Plum Island in a long time.
    I guess you could try, that why they call it fishing. But I wouldn't
    sit on a beach in the middle of winter fishing, when the catching is
    a remote possibility.

    Clams/squid/cut herring/macks would be good bait.

    Surfland should be open, they do a lot of reel repairs.

    good luck

532.221" for cod 10 fish limit24MAKO::BROPHYWed Feb 12 1997 10:2012
    It is now 21" for all cod & haddock. 19" for pollock. There is also a
    10 fish per person limits. These are the result of Northeast
    Multispecies Management Plan Amendment 7. If you're interested take a
    look at  http://www.wh.whoi.edu/amend7/cprfr.html

    I understand that they are taking cod from the shore off the beachs of
    scituate.

532.321" Cod July 1997???WEDOIT::JOYCEWed Feb 12 1997 12:068
    I could be wrong, but....

    I stand by the 20" cod size. If you read the rule, you will find the
    cod size limit is 20" the first year of the plan. It then goes to 21"
    the second year. The plan became effective July 1, 1996. So I'm
    assuming the 21" cod size will kick in July 1, 1997.
