The Brookfield Lions Club is holding their annual derby on South Pond and Quaboag this Saturday. Rules have changed (1 day only, no trout category, smaller cash prizes) but it should be a good time - provided they have ice. Anyone been there recently ? I fished on the MA-NH border last Sunday, there was 8" ice but open water across the middle of an average size (~550a) lake. These lakes are on the MA-CT border and are nearly 2x as large with river inlets. Should I bring my kayak ? Fished this derby for half a day last year and we were soaked by torrential rains within 2 hours of the start. I had rain gear on but it didn't matter. There was 3" water on the ice before the heavy rains started anew. The year before there wasn't ice. Any one participating ? Thanks, Bob

Great time and the weather hung in, despite early signs of rain. Started out foggy - could see about 1/3 across the lake. Between 500-700 people on the ice once it cleared around 10. Some nice fish, although we put nothing on the board between the 4 of us. Winners (testing my recall) Pike ~17.50 lbs Pickeral~ 4.00 lbs LM Bass ~ 6.86 lbs Calico B 2.64 lbs (also called crappie) Y Perch 2.76 lbs Pout ~ 1.65 lbs That what was in first when I left at 4pm. Folks had til 5 to weigh in. Anyone else out there ? -Bob | |||||

Wow! That was one big Large Mouth Bass.........I take it this was not a catch and release type tourney...... :( I believe that I have a Bass Tournament there this summer. I've never fished it. Looks like it has potential! Bob M |
