525.1 | Another fun Adventure! | KDCA03::CDCUP_GREENE | | Mon Jan 27 1997 07:21 | 23 |

Well here I am at work again after another great weekend
trip of brook trout fishing. I am very sore today after
all the rough trails we had to hit to get to this lake
which is called South Quinn. This trail that we take
is approximatley 4.5 miles straight uphill through the
mountain sides. It is alot easier coming out, that is
for sure.
Anyway we arrived there just after light and stayed for
the better part of the day. The brook trout were not as
active as usual but the 3 of us ended up with 8 of them.
There was alot of overcast and at times I could not even
see my Arctic Cat were it was parked (about 20ft away) due
to the heavy snowsquals. It was a wierd weather day.
Anyway we sure had fun and my cousin had a chance to catch
his first brook trout... which just happened to be the
biggest catch of the day (14 inches).
So I hope I can put a few more winter adventures in here,
and hope to read a few others.
Cheers,
Chris

525.2 | Well, they can't all be good.....Can they? | MSBCS::MERCIER | | Tue Jan 28 1997 09:21 | 20 |
| Well, I had so much fun last weekend with the Atlantics I decided to
try again. Saturday's weather was 50 degrees and windy. I couldn't buy
a fish!!! No one could.. The front had shut those fish down and good.
Decided to try again Sunday. Now it's 15 degrees and Windy. Youch!!!
Well, after a few minutes of jigging I got a hit. No hook set........
About a tedious hour later and I dropped the jig to the bottom. When
Whack!!! Five seconds and gone. I bring the jig up immediately for a
quick inspection and drop it straight down. Two quick jigs and Whack!!!
Pig On!!! After about 30 seconds I took a look down the hole and saw
what looked like a big female. It was a monster!!!! I wished that I
didn't see it because about 10 seconds later and there was nothing
there. Closer inspection of the jig showed that one of the treble
hooks had straightened out......
Just wasn't my weekend and now I have a Royal Head Cold..........
Wait till next week
;^)

525.3 | Questions on Salmon | RICKS::JACKSON | | Tue Feb 11 1997 14:23 | 13 |
| Hi
According to the local newspapers, 40 salmon ranging in size from
5-10 lbs were released into Hopkinton Reservoir, located in Hopkinton
State Park, about three weeks ago. I have seen about 10 of them caught
so far, and I too had the pleasure of catching one last weekend. The
fish I caught was 5.2 lbs, 23 inches long, on a 4lb test leader that
required 15 minutes of fighting to bring in. I caught this fish on
Power bait, all of the other fish I have seen were caught on Shiners
with 6lb or less leaders. Has anyone caught a salmon on stronger
leader while icefishing? Are most Salmon caught near the ice, midway,
or near the bottom?

I use 6lb Trilene Cold Weather line on my jigging pole and tilts!
We had an exceptional day the first time out for them and it has slowed
down since. We have hooked a couple but one proceeded to straighten the
treble hooks out on the jig and others just seem to shake free. The day
we did well the fish were extremely agressive. We've hit bad weather
fronts since then although I've caught some Brookies, Bass, Pickeral,
Giant Perch through the ice but had to work hard for them.
I have been out on the ice about six times this year and have yet
to catch one on a trap!! All my fish were caught jigging...Sorry, can't
tell you my secrets.....But as far as depth goes you must alternate....
Try 2' under the ice and various other depths to the bottom. Once we
find the right level jigging we adjust the tilts and then jig some
more. There is no magic to it.....You must adjust to the fishes mood
usually brought on by fishing pressure and weather conditions.... The
colder and raunchier it is the better the fishing so far..... For some
unknown reason to myself when the weather is nice and warm the buggers
don't cooperate....When it was 8 below 0 we were smacking them!!!!!
You did the right thing by playing the Salmon for as long as you
did cuase they don't like those holes.......The one thing you want to
make sure is that you take your ice scoop and get all the knicks on
those holes off. That's when they break you off. Just imagine what
those guys are capable of when their metabolism isn't so slow from the
cold water!!!!
Enjoy.......
