Do any of you who fish the Merrimack for bass, catch mackeral for bait? It gets expensive buying it every week. Do mackeral come into the river? Are there any good places in this area for mackeral? Years ago, I fished for mackeral in Plymouth harbor. stan

There's a seasonal mackeral fishery hanging within a mile out of the mouth of the Merrimack. Precedes the appearance of the stripers, then usually disappears (north, I presume) with the appearance of the bluefish. This year apparently the mack's have hung out a bit longer than usual - though the last time I was out there (two weekends ago) there weren't any mack jiggers working the normal haunts... I don't think they venture up into the river (unless driven there) but I could be wrong...

There have been tinker mackerel around. these are significantly smaller than the regular sized macks that move through the area in may or so. They are like striper candy. If you use chum, you'll be able to keep the school under the boat and fill the livewell.

It's best to fish for them in April/May, before the Blues scatter the schools. It's fairly easy to catch a bunch, freeze them, and you have your bait for the summer. DJM |
