513.0. "New Shark World Record" by USCTR1::HAMELIN () Tue Aug 13 1996 13:49

    The Worc. T&G had a picture in this morning's paper of a 27 yo guy from
    Leicester,MA. who set (pending approval) the new world record for blue
    shark (457#) in the recently held Martha's Vineyard shark tournament.
    It took 6 1/2 hours to land on 70# test. I'll try to remember to bring the
    article in tomorrow and post it. The previous record was caught off
    Australia (43x#).
    Moderator, please move this to the appropriate note# - I did do a
    search of Sharks but only found those in "WHO ARE YOU" (note 3 ?).

    Here's a few other details on this world record blue shark....

    Caught by Peter Bergin, a recent transplant to Shrewsbury, Ma who used
    to run charters out of Spring Lake,NJ. The "Quality Time" out of Scituate
    was captained by Steve James.

    Blue Shark weighed 545# and measured 11'3". Prior record was caught off
    Australia in Oct.'76, weighed 437#. Peter used 80# test on a 6'rod/ stand-up
    gear w/ a back harness.Seas were running about 10'.
    Steve placed 2nd in the 2-day cumulative-total tourney which required
    minimum weight of 300# shark to register. Winner had total of 661#
    including a 356#. Steve will have the head and shoulder mounted.

    That's amazingly short for such a heavy blue shark. It must have been
    very stocky.

I agree with Mark. I've seen many a 10 footer while tuna fishing and they have
never been more than 10 minutes of effort to get to the boat. Granted, on 250#
test line, but still. The 10 footers are probably low 200 pound range.

    The angler was 6' tall, but only weighed 145 pounds!
    With a 6 foot rod, standing up, in ten foot seas, I'd
    say he was lucky to get it to the boat in 6 1/2 hours :*)
513.5Talk About A FishASABET::JDOYLEFri Aug 16 1996 09:147
    On the news on the way in this morning there was some talk of great
    white caught off Beverly and if I heard it right it was 18' and
    2k Pounds. Are my ears going bad or would one of these things run
    that many pounds. Not sure I would want to take the hook out of this
    fellows mouth.

    today's paper had it as 17' and 2000#'s (1T). Too bad there wasn't a
    picture for comparison to the blue shark...the great white would make
    the blue look like a runt!

     The Great White was netted. When they cut it open they
    found the head of a dolphin in it, as in flipper.

    Actually what they found was the entire (nearly undigested) carcass of
    a rather small porpoise (31 lbs). I happened to catch a live news feed
    from the deck of the boat when the fisheries scientists were doing the
    necropsy and they actually showed the porpoise slide out onto the
    deck (eeewwww!)...

    The talking heads commented that they hoped the viewers weren't eating
    dinner...

513.9Flyrod shark recordUSCTR1::HAMELINThu Sep 05 1996 13:494
    Read in one of the local fishing rags that a new record for shark via
    flyrod was also set in this tourney... I believe it was close to 40#
    and caught by a MV local. It was also a blue (baby blue ???)
