502.0. "Big NH lakes" by NUBOAT::HEBERT (Captain Bligh) Wed May 01 1996 12:08
I launched in Wentworth Lake last Saturday. The fact that I had the
*only* boat on the lake should have tipped me off to the fishing
conditions, but I was actually there to shakedown my boat, which
performed flawlessly.
Anyway, the water temp was 39 to 40, and there was no sign of any fish in
any shallows. No beds, no fish, no nothing (not surprising; this is
early, and the the water is *cold*). I marked some fish holding over
structure in the 12' to 18' range, and that was all.
The lake level is very high, and the current in the channel between
Crescent Lake and Wentworth is very strong.
My cousin showed me something wierd: there were 30-40 dead white fish
lying on the bottom off the end of one of the floating docks at the
launch site. They looked like maybe large white perch (well, actually,
they looked like scup!), all 12" to 16" long. Like someone had caught
them, killed them, then dumped them into the water there at the dock.
The water was somewhat murky, so it was not possible to more accurately
identify them.
Most (but not all!) of the buoys were in the lake. It looks like they
wintered over. There is some floating junk wood here and there, so it's
not a good time to roar around without looking.

502.1 | Could it be? | BSS::JACKSON | Set the drag just right! | Wed May 01 1996 17:33 | 6 |
| Usually when we (in colorado) see dead fish by the ramp, its from
stocking. Unfortunately, there are a high number of fatalities. This
was eveident at Pueblo rez. last friday. Dozens of dead fish. The
crawdads on larger fish were feasting though.

what species of fish?? I know Pueblo stocks catchable size bows,
walleye and wipers....just curious as if you were able to identify the
species.

502.3 | dead white perch | CPEEDY::MACINTYRE | PATHWORKS Server Engineering | Thu May 02 1996 15:00 | 11 |
| Those were probably white perch, not uncommon to see dead ones early
in the spring in some coves. Don't know why.
I spent the day on winni yesterday. Spent most of the time breaking in
a new motor but managed to catch a couple nice smallies. Too early for
the beds yet - another 2-3 weeks maybe.
Lake was real high. Don't know the water temps, haven't installed the
electronics yet. Cold.

| They looked to possibly be trout just by shape, but the color was
kinda white/silver which to me could also be striper. They
looked like they were down there for a few days if ya get my drift.

| If there was a stream nearby, it's quite likely they were White
Suckers, which have a remarkably high post-coitus mortality rate.
