Just installed a new transducer on a hummingbird depth finder. Without
putting it in the water how do you tell if it is working. When I cut it
on I get 10ft' warning signal and the screen then goes blank. Is this
correct? The transducer is about two feet off of the ground.

There is a self-test program on the Hummingbird you might want to try.
Hold your finger on the on button, till you hear a series of beeps. The
program will now run thru a simulation exercise. Another suggestion is
go into your menu's. When you come across the bottom alarm screen, hit
the hold button. This will allow you time to adjust to the right depth.
You said you have your transducer two feet off the floor. Then set
your depth for l foot. Hit your hold button again and see what it does.
Recently returned my to the manufacturer for another problem I was
experiencing, but really like mine. Have owned it for 4 years and it
has always been dependable...

A transducer can work out of water depending on the output power. Since
sound travels 5-6 times faster in water than in air, a reading of 10-12'
on the LCR is about right when the ground is only 2' away. Try passing
your foot between the transducer and the ground to see if it is detected.

re .1 You must have the expensive hummingbird, mine is probably low
end since it came as part of the boat. I have a small circular dial for
depth readout. A black button on the bottem. The only thing I've been
able to change is the depth of the warning signal and that seems to be
10 ft or above. If you can do more please let me know, as I have no
manual. thanks
