No bluefish yet ;-). I think I caught about 2 last year surf fishing at the
cape. They were 1 year olds (2-3#s). I also caught a bunch of snappahs. This
was mid-sep. I hope there are more this year than last.

Yesterday, I was talking to Kay at "Surfland B & T" on Plum Island,
and she said that a few Blues were caught Saturday (6/8) night at
High Tide from the P.I. Bridge over the P.I. River.

Fished Merrimack river last friday 2:00 p.m to 8:00 p.m. Between the 3
of us we picked up 11 blues and about 8ish schoolies. No keepers. All
blues were on the small side 18-20 inch range.

    Hello All,
Im brand new to salt water fishing. Is there a
size limit for blues. What are you catching them on. I just bought
a 10' surf rod but Im not sure about tackle. Is there a note in here
    for the new comer?
                                               Thanks, Jim

Hey Jim, thier is no limit that I am aware of. If you like strong
tasteing fish, then blue fish is the fish for you. As far as tackle
goes, 20 lb test line and a steel leader should do the trick. If you
hook on to a really big one, WELLLLLL GOOD LUCK.....

OH BY THE WAY, DON'T TRY AND LIP THEM LIKE YOU WOULD STRIPERS, THAT IS
IF YOU VALUE ALL OF YOUR FINGERS.

next time you drop through andover, swing by and we can talk about
    doing the river together.

Blues and stripers can be caught from the same water using similar
tackle. I know of no bluefish size regulations offhand, but did hear
something about a 10 fish limit. You may want to check.

Blues will also hit the same baits and lures as stripers (plugs,
big metal, jigs, worms, eels, cut/live mackeral or poagies, etc.)

Blues have *very* nasty teeth and jaws. Keep body parts away from
their mouths. Use pliors to remove hooks. Many use a club to beat them
to death if they intend to keep them. Not terribly humane, but not any
more vicious than what they'll do if they get to sink their teeth into
    you.

Tackle differs slightly in that you'll want to use steel leaders
for blues. Blues, lb. for lb., are stronger fish than stripers. They'll
fight a bit harder, and a lot longer, whereas stripers usually tire
    after their initial run.

499.710-fish limit on BluesNEMAIL::GREENBERGTue Jul 23 1996 12:577
There is a 10 fish daily limit for blues, but given their current
"downsized" population, some charter captains are imposing lower limits
for their boats. One I know of has established 5 per angler as his
    limit.

covers broef life histories on marine fishes and how to catch them. It
list boat charter conpanies, info on boat access and shore angling
sites. Also covers recreational lobstering, clamming, oystering and

I had an interesting talk with a lifelong Plum Island resident this
weekend while Striper fishing. I inquired about the status of the Blue
fishing this year. She said the Blues haven't been near shore much
this year, but the locals are expecting that Hurricane Eduoard will
drive them alot closer to shore in the next couple of days...
