494.0. "fish kills" by NEWVAX::WHITMAN (gun control = 5% gun + 95% control) Fri Apr 12 1996 10:46
A local bass/bream lake here in southwest Florida has experienced a
devistating fishkill. Lake Trafford, a 600 acre lake in Immokolee, FL (about
40 miles southwest of Lake Okeechobee) suffered an algea bloom this week that
has killed off an extimated 50,000 fish including some bass in excess of 10
lbs. The fish & wildlife guys are estimating it will take the lake 8-10 years
to recover. The alligators are having a feast for the moment.
This lake was locally renowned for it's trophy bass and huge crappie
population... There were tournaments held on the lake nearly every weekend.
The experts are saying the lack of oxygen in the water because of the algea
is the cause of the devistation...
