Anybody catch that story about the derby winner at the Winny contest that found out the next day he actually came in 3rd. Seemes he caught a 13" trout on day 1 that weighed over a lb but after hanging on the board through day 2 was re-weighed at under >8 lbs for a 3rd place finish. He and his son had been admiring the first place prize of a $17,000 fishing rig. To say they were disappointed is an understatement. I thought everyone knew that fish lost weight once out of the lake; being out for 24+ hours is outrageous. Someone told them that the fish might have lost .01/lb or so. From what I have read it could be up to 25% of the fish's body weight after even a few hours out of the water. The sponsor (Rotary Club?) says no big deal, think of the fund raising effort - but the father and son who spend a day and a night drooling over the new boat are threatening to sue for the $16,900. What a PR disaster this has turned out to be.

I really don't blame the guy for sueing. Once the fish is "officially" weighed in...that's the official weight. Period! I hope he wins.

Yeah, the idea of reweighing the fish on the 2nd day was a blunder by tournament officials. Weighed in is weighed in.

Just an update on the story. What really happened was the fish was weighed without the basket being tared out. When they looked at it against the other trout the next day they decided to weigh it again and tare out the basket. I know they were lead to believe they would win the boat but the difference between 1st and 3rd was considerable. I doubt very much that the fish lost much body weight since this happens with evaporation. The fish were frozen solid. Regards DonB, |
