489.1inches or pounds????MSBCS::MERCIERThu Mar 21 1996 09:297
    Did you mean to say 21lbs. and not 21"? If that's the case I really
    screwed up at Moosehead lake years ago!!!! The State Record for Mass is
    6.4 lbs caught in 1966 at Otis resevoir and I'm pretty sure that one
    was well over 21 inches.

    Just Wondering......

    I am simply a reporter. 21-inch is how the article is stated. I told
    you, you should not have EATEN that thing! Any Colorado boys out there
    hear about this fish?

    I have caught several brook trout (in Labrador) bigger than 21 inches
    and none were bigger than 1/2 the world record. 21 lbs would be several
    pounds over the world record. For a 21" trout to be over 10 lbs, it
    would look like a large basketball, or have several pounds of lead in
    it's stomach.

      I'm from Colorado Springs, and I remember reading about this over
    a month ago, but I can't remember the details, 'cause it showed all
    other records for all fish that can be had in this state.

      I will try to find the write-up on this and post it.

    The NH state record is 25.5" and 9 lbs. The article is clearly not
    reported by a fisherman. :-)

	   According to my trusty old (1974) McClane's Standard Fishing
	Encyclopedia the world record Brook Trout is:

			31 1/2 inches long

			14 1/2 pounds

	   The book says that both Rangeley and Moosehead Lakes (and a
	couple others in that region) were regular producers of 9 - 11 lb.
	Brookies! They didn't say where the record came from.

    I'd guess the record came from Newfoundland or Labrador. They have some
    monsters up there.

489.12Trout Magazine ArticleMROA::RSCHOTTTue Mar 26 1996 11:529
         There was a good article in Trout Magazine a while back about
    "coasters", brook trout that spend at least part of their lives in Lake
    Superior, and migrate in and out of rivers such as the Nipigon.

         The same article talked about the 14 lb. world record, and
    mentioned unconfirmed reports of larger fish having been caught in
    South America.
