481.0. "Wildlife protection act" by SCOMAN::BING () Fri Mar 01 1996 15:16

I plan on sending the following letter to several newspapers
in the Boston area. It basically outlines what the Wildlife
Protection Act is, who sponsors it and what it's goals are.

The Wildlife Protection Act. Sounds harmless doesn't it? In fact it
sounds like something you'd want to vote for. Afterall who doesn't
want to protect our wildlife? Too bad this is not about protecting
wildlife. All this is about is people from out of state and out of
this country forcing their opinions down your throat. This "Act"
will be on the November ballot here in Massachusetts. If it passes
it will ban trapping, fishing and certain forms of hunting. It will
also force the Fish and Wildlife dept to add anti-hunters to their
board. Think it can't happen? Think again. The people for the Ethical
Treatment of Animals (PETA) have been very good at getting anti hunting
laws passed in this country. They have also enlisted the help of a
gentleman from England who has successfully had fishing banned in many
locales over there. If we're not careful it can happen here too.
PETA plans of protests and demonstrations to force their opinions on you.
They will verbally assault you, throw rocks in the water where you fish
and purposely swim, boat and do whatever it takes to disturb your quiet
peaceful day of fishing. Is that what you want? I certainly don't. I plan
on voting against this supposed protection act and would ask that all
of you do also. Whether you hunt and fish or not this will affect you
and your children for years to come. I would rather see my children
spend a day fishing than standing on a street corner. I'm sure you would
to. We need to band together and tell these people that we don't want
them or their idea's forced on us and the best way to do that is to say
NO next November.

we have/had a similar thing happening in Colorado. Due to pressure from
anti-trapping elements and after a year of meetings and deliberations,
a new trapping "law", if you will, went into effect here in COlo this
year. The Colo DoW (Div of Wildlife) *DID* listen to and take
recomendations from a board which consisted of DoW officers, landowners,
ranchers, farmers, anti-trappers, environmentalists, city dwellers, etc.
The DoW's reasoning for using the input from a varity of types of
people was because that's what lives in Colo. The needs, wants, and
desiers of **ALL** that enjoy the outdoors were taken into consideration.
The results, outlawing steel legg-holding traps and snares were 2 of the
many changes, (which were needed, just last week a lion had to be shot
in the north end of COlo Spgs because it had killed a house pet, the
lion was too injured by a snare to hunt deer)plus placing a season and
limit on many species that are trapped PLUS elimanating trapping on
species that are losing ground in COlo. This did not serve the needs and
wants of anyone, but at least reached a happy medium for many. At least
there was no vote...the public has no right voting on issues which we
have elected and appointed personal to do, namely manage our wildlife...
Joe Public (no offense intended with the next statement ) usually knows
SQUAT about game management, (refer to out screwed up bear hunting laws
we have now due to a public vote and all the bear problems we have).

So, in effect, what I'm saying is that ALL types of people need to input
to the issue as all types of people use the outdoors, BUT! I am totally
against putting issues like this on a ballot...a special board needs
to be made up, by the DoW, of wildlife users who would *input* to the
DoW, or whatever ya'll call it back there, their ideas, needs and
    wants.
(I'd like some more info on the acts -.1 says PETA is doing, not that I
don't believe you, but I know some PETA people and they are against some of
what You are saying the eastcoastPETA are doing and in fact deny that it
    happens anywhere)

so what happens in COlo? Ranchers, who want the right to take out any
depredatating animal they want at any time, get a Republican Senator to
place a bill in the COlo COngress that RESENDS the new trapping law!
Because the farmers and ranchers want to take out any
depredatating animal they want in any way, at anytime, with no
supervision by the DoW.....keep this stuff away from the lawmakers and
keep it with the division personnel that are elected and appointed to
    do their job.

    my 3 cents
