474.0. "? Massachusetts License Cost for '96" by NETCAD::BIRO () Tue Dec 26 1995 09:57

I was told this weekend that Massachusetts will be doubling the cost of
the fishing & hunting license. Is this true and if so has anyone got
a new price list for a resident fishing license.

    thanks john

I think I read $23 for fishing and $45 for resident combo. It is $95
    for non- resident combo

474.3$$$$ for a good cause?PSDV::SURRETTETheCluePhoneIsRinging,AndIt'sForYOU.Thu Dec 28 1995 09:0326

    Hi All,

    I don't really have a problem paying $27.50 for a
license, *provided* the money is spent on the things
    for which it was intended.

I believe (though cannot verify) that Massachusetts is
relatively good about such things. The license revenues
are placed in a fund that is earmarked for environmental
and outdoor sportsmen's activities. Of course, it may
be just a smokescreen, and the funds are really ending
up in the political pension fund, who knows.

Does anyone know where a fiscal report of the fish and
game activities can be attained? I'd be curious to
see just where all this money for licensing *really*
goes. The amount, giving the large number of hunters,
trappers, and fishermen etc in the state must be pretty
significant. Maybe a trip to the Alta Vista Web Index
is in order. Maybe the info is online.

    Cheers, and Happy New Year,

    Gusman

This has been discussed in ::HUNTING. Basically the increase
is for "management" purposes only. You WILL NOT see any more
trout stocked, you WILL NOT see any more pheasants stocked. You
will see absolutely NOTHING from the increase. They claim without
the increase they would be out of money in the next couple years.
Frankly I'm not paying $45 for a sporting license. I'll pop the
xtra $$ for a non-resident for NH and hunt deer from Sept-Dec. When
I fish which isnt often I'll take my son and let him fish or fish a
private pond I go to. So MA loses my $$ totally.

I believe that the "EP's" (Environmental Police) are funded by
these monies as well as other things. You might call Westboro for
details if you want the allocations..

474.7$45.00 for a year of fishing/hunting!!!! thats a deal!!CONSLT::MMURPHYTue Jan 02 1996 06:2413

I have " NO PROBLEM" with the increase!! Geesh ! I go out to
dinner with my wife and drop that $45.00 easy!!! And thats in
what..? 2 hours!! As far as I'm concerned, Mass has come a
LONG way with their trout/salmon stocking program! Lastyear I finally
had to deal with the (Environmental Police). I like that! Sorry to
say....too many half ass fishermen in mass! What do I mean by half ass
fishermen you ask..??? Take a walk around the Wachusett some day,
and bring a large trash bag with you!!
                                                  Happy new year!

I really haven't fished Mass but when I called about the Non-Resident
Hunting License they said, "Big Game was $99.50 and Small Game would
be $65.50 plus $5.10 for either a Archery Stamp or Muzzleloader Stamp
which would be seperate for 1996.

As to your issue of 45 bucks for a Mass license I normally wouldn't
have a problem with that but what is this big increase going toward.
Does the Big Murph have the answer to that....hmmmm..... So far all
I've heard for a rumor is they're running low on funds, has anyone
heard any different? If the money was going toward cleaning up some of
the areas and adding more E P then I'm for it. If it's just because
their low on funds...I don't like it a bit! I did buy one though....

Dool PLEASE remain Cool !! First off the $45.00 bucks is for
a sportsmans license. I have ZERO of a problem with this increase.
A few years back there was a $5.00 increase, but that wasn't a
license increase...although a lot of people thought so. That increase
went to buying conservation land. Oakham and Paxton come to mind.
Anyways, this time around yes was a license increase. You know me,
I did have a SMALL run in with a e.p. officer. After he peppered
my butt a little for not having a anchor (rightly so) in my boat,
we had a little chat. Lastyear I belive 5 new officers were hired
and plans for a few more for "96". Dool if you need a little more
comforting...call the Fisheries & Wildlife in Westboro (508)366-4479
ask for Rich Hartly. This is a top knotch biologist who truely cares
about our waters. Every year Ma. stocks more and more trout, salmon,
pike, and tiger muskellunge in our waters all over the state.

Glad to hear the money is going to what I am spending it on, I was
worried that it would go to the MWRA of something other then the Fish
    And Game.

    hey Murph,

They might want to stock a few more seeing "Team Bulldog" needs
all the help they can get........

I don't have a major issue Murph with the increase of the license
but was rather shocked to see a sportmens license jump 20 smackers. You
know me Murph, if its for a good cause...somethin like that VT derby we
were supposed to attend... :^) If the $$$ actually is going to more
stocking then I can deal with it, even buying more conservation land
sits great with me. That bad rumor of just being low on funds really
struck a nerve with the big guy here. Your knowledge of these matters
Mr. Murph just puts a man at ease.

May the years fishing be a great one.....

474.14Stamp - What stamp???BUSY::DOMINICKJoe Dominick 297-4643 MRO1-3/C6Thu Mar 07 1996 09:2715

Well I bought my '96 fishing license for the $27.50 with the widlife "embossed" stamp included.
What I got a chuckle about was that there was an attached mailer to send away for the actual
stamps, at an additional cost. Yes, all you Ted Turner types it does cost extra to colorize!!

I forget how much the actual wildlife stamp set cost, but the state has got a hell of nerve.

I remember a time I paid maybe $15 for a license, got a trout stamp, a map & guide to the
ponds and waterways of Massachusetts, and I got a plastic holder to proudly display my license
        on my cap or wherever....
