402.0. "World Cup Fishing" by NITMOI::WOOD () Wed Aug 10 1994 11:27
Did anyone else participate in the North American World Cup Fishing
Tournament sponsored by Chevy Trucks and Kmart amongst others? If so,
how did you do? For those not familiar with the tourney, a 200$ prize
was awarded in each US state and Canadian province, for the largest
fish each day during June and July. There were 15 species included, and
a equalization scale was used for each area and species at an attempt
to make anglers chances equal. For example a Smallmouth Bass in NH was
worth 48 points per inch. A Lake trout from NH might be worth 35 points
and a trout from Manitoba might be worth 20 points an inch. The 100
largest fish per region (5 regions in all) go to the regional finals
for a 100,000 dollar purse and the 5 regional winners go to a winner
take all 1 million dollars fish off labor day weekend. My daughter won
State (NH) twice while I was on vacation and I won once. Last week
we received fedx packages asking if we needed any special travel
requirements for the regionals and if we would need a boat provided
or would we bring our own! They also wanted photo's and affidavits to
verify the catch was ligitimate. They fly you to, in our case Michigan,
provide food, lodging and boat for 3 days. We're excited, but there was
a disclaimer at the bottom that said they were planning all this in
case we go to the regionals next week, but that we were not as of yet
confirmed as participants....Whatever that means...I'm not sure if our
fish have already been bounced against the other regional entries and
they just want the photos and affidavit to confirm, or if they still
need to do the comparison. We are keeping our fingers crossed...For
what it's worth my daughter had a 19.75 inch and 19.25 inch smallie
while dad had a 17.5 inch one...Realisticly mine doesn't seem big
enough that it would make it, unless participation was really low,
which is what I expect...The 19.75 fish is right up there with the big
smallies I've seen/heard of over the years, so I would expect it to
maybe take a position in the top 100....

did you get any money/prizes or just a chance to
go on to the next event.

402.2 | My Camera is a Jinx...... | MSBCS::MERCIER | | Wed Aug 10 1994 12:16 | 13 |
| I was in it. Unfortunately, I didn't catch anything worth a damn when I
had my camera. When I didn't have my camera I got some beautiful
Largemouths in the 24 inch range so I let them go without fame :^(.
I spent the final week of the contest up at Moosehead Lake looking for
the monster togue. Being that the water was the warmest it had been in
years and the wind was predominately out of the South all week which
for some reason shuts the fish down I only ended up with some small
Lakers and Salmon.
Maybe Next Year
Good Luck on Your Entries.

402.3 | We brought 2 cameras... | NITMOI::WOOD | | Wed Aug 10 1994 12:42 | 5 |
| We won 600.00 total so far, so there was a payoff other then
advancing...One day, when we called in the 19.25 inch fish, it was
the only fish entered that day in NH...a 5 inch perch would have won!
All that money was just sitting there for the taking....That's why I
suspect the participation was low...

402.5 | Pre spawn bass??? | NITMOI::WOOD | | Fri Aug 12 1994 13:52 | 7 |
| I guess we had some good news yesterday. My daughter and I found out we
both are going to the regionals. The bad news is they delayed the
regionals until next May...The story was they had a lot of problems
with cheating and it will take some time to sort out, and in addition
they were having lots of difficulty contacting all the participants
in such a short time frame, probably because many people are on
vacation this time of year....Maybe they just ran low on funding :-)
