392.0. "Kanoza Lake Raffle!" by JUPITR::GINGRAS () Wed Jun 08 1994 13:19

The Haverhill Parks and Recreation Dept is having a raffle to fish on
Lake Kanoza. Apparently this lake has been off-limits to fishing for 50-60yrs.
The money generated is supposed to go the the Park & Rec's 'Take a Kid Fishing'
program.

They are predicting that many State records will be broken during this fishing
lottery. The lake is supposed to have Monster Bass and Pickeral. It is also
rumored, according tho the Park & Rec rep I talked to, to have Northern Pike and
Sturgeon in it. He also mentioned that a long time ago the water dept stocked
the lake with brown trout to control some problem. He believed it was an insect
problem. So he thinks there is huge browns in it too. The lake is ~400acres with
a maximum depth of 40-50'. He is trying to get contour maps to distribute to the
winners.

The raffle tickets are $10.00 a piece and must be in by 6/21. The fishing day is
6/25.

They will pick 50 winners, who can then pick a buddy to fish with. The 'buddy',
however, must have also bought a raffle ticket. It is boats only. No motors of
any kind. The fishing segments are only 3hrs long and there are 2 segments, 7-10
am and 1 to 4pm.

They are alos trying to get other raffle prizes..rods, reel, etc...

To get ticket and other info you'll have to call the Haverhill Park & Rec dept
at 508-374-2389.

392.1License ? Tiger Muskies ?VICKI::DODIERSingle Income, Clan'o KidsWed Jun 08 1994 18:0618
My father mentioned that to me also. I wonder if you need a valid
fishing license to fish it ?

As a kid, I remember there were "other kids ;-)" that fished it and
yes, there are big bass and pickeral in there. I remember as a kid
seeing one of my friend cast a big rebel plug out. We laughed cause the
plug was so big, but then a large (i.e. 4'+) fish nailed it.

My guess is that it was a pike because I didn't think pickeral grew
that big. It also did a couple tail walks before breaking his 12 lb.
test. Whatever it was, it was huge and pickeral-like.

Maybe John can answer this, but I was told that tiger muskies were
introduced to try to control the fish population. Supposedly they are
sterile and would eat lots of fish then eventually die out. A call to
the F&G could probably confirm whether or not this is true.

392.3Kenoza LakeSALEM::ROCHE_RThu Jun 09 1994 13:5828

Hi Folks,

Have never contributed to this notes file but this subject is
near and dear to my heart. I live in Haverhill, have all my life.
About the introduction of fish into Kenoza, doubtful, however there
are three heavily stocked ponds in the area all of which are
considered possible water supplies with run-offs
directly/indirectly into Kenoza Lake. The migration of fish into
the lake either through these run-offs or some kids contribution
is HIGHLY likely. Sturgeon, well that's a stretch but brownies,
brookies and rainbows could happen. I have personally, (don't tell
the came warden), caught some massive pickeral and bass in there as
well as some of the biggest, cleanest best tasting horn-pout I ever
have had. To tell the truth I never have taken a kibbe from that
lake but sure have taken bass out like I were catching kibbe. I
have seen huge fish taken but I don't know if records are in there.
Don't forget this is a water supply and is treated on occasion.
Also, with the amount of bass and pickeral the forage fish are in
high demand. These two things may contribute to smaller than
anticipated fish. Regardless we fishermen in Haverhill have
dreamed of, begged, even payed-off people :-) for an opportunity like
this. SOme of us were upset that it was open to non-residents. Such
is life. I am on a white water drip that weekend so I will miss it,
but the best of luck to those who do go and fish, and enjoy it !!!!

Karen,

In response to your note asking for directions. 495 north into
Haverhill. You will be looking for the 2nd route 110 exit. The first
will say route 110 River street I believe, the second is a few miles
after that. I believe that is route 110 Bradford/Amesbury. Regardless
it is the Northern Essex Community College exit. At the bottom of
the exit take a left and just keep going untill you see the lake on
the left. I don't know where the check-in will be but I am sure there
will be plenty of people around to ask. Good luck !!!

I was told that last year when a welder had to do some under water

away. The divers did not know what type of fish, only that they

There will be a special sow on the rules etc for the fishing raffle on
Lake Kanoza. It will be on local cable TV (Haverhill) CH 33
tonight (monday 6-20) at 7 PM. I think that is what they said, if not
it will be on Tuesday night. Any one out there who can video tape it
for me or post a review of what happen.

This is a non-powered boat only, no live bait, no rubber boats, etc.
There are a lot of rules.

I am not sure if only the contest rules willl be on Haverhill Cable
TV (ch 33) or if they will be having some live coverage on Sat. as
well. I dont think they have firm up all the details.

One rule that I am not sure of, no trailers parking. When asked they
were not sure if that meant boat trailers or campers.

WELL!!! YA SHOULD A SEEN THE ONE THAT GAT AWAY!!!

The action was real slow for everyone that I talked to in the morning
session. I caught a few bass all around the 2#range but under the 18"
minimum. I only caught one pickeral, 17in, again under the 18" minimum.
For a lake that was supposed to be THE PLACE for pickeral, not many
were caught. my partner only caught one bass and no pickeral. There
were plenty of 1+lb yellow perch to be had though. At the end of our 3
hrs very few fish were brought in. When I left there was only 2 bass on
the board, 3.5 and 3.0 lbs, and 2 pickeral. One pickeral was exactly
18in, and the other was a monster...4.6lbs and 27inches. There were
still a couple of boats still coming in when I left, so maybe more
fish made the board, and I have no idea how the afternoon session went.
Does anyone know if the Haverhill paper published the results???
The weather was wet and windy... The only thing any fish took from me
was deep diving rapalas..No luck with worms, sluggos, spinners, jigs,
surface lures, etc.

392.19Ya, I know, a little late but...VICKI::DODIERSingle Income, Clan'o KidsTue Jun 28 1994 13:3116
Back when I was a kid and "saw the other kids fishing it ;-)", one
of the prime spots was a small cove in the back right hand corner of
the lake (facing the lake from Rt.110). Did you make it down there by
chance ? There is/was a small island that stuck out from the corner of
the cove.

Both the cove and around the island used to be primo for big bass
and pickeral. The shallow diving Rapala was the lure of choice back
then as well, but I've seen big pickeral and bass caught on rooster tail
spinners and dare-devils too.

Never did much with rubber worms as a kid. Used to use the real
thing when bass fishing (night crawlers) with lots of success though.
