367.0. "Charters" by HOWLIN::NPARE () Tue Apr 05 1994 09:30

    	Last night, I received a flier from the Rainbow Chaser Charter,
    (aka ex-Decie Walt Gibson and friend). He offers scuba/fishing charters
    (six persons) out of Gloucester to Stellwagen, Tillies, and Jeffreys.

    	He address and number are:

    		Captain Walt Gibson
    		908 Mammoth Road
    		Dracut, MA. 01826

    		(508)957-5865

    Disclaimer applies, I have no connection with this, and posted this for
    the benefit of other Dec employees looking for Charter choices.

I've fished with him a few times. Never caught much of anything, except
dogfish.

    	Anything specific ? I've been out with them a few times. I usually
    go on the Memorial Day marathon trip they do (5:30 am - 5:00 pm). They
    usually do about as good as any of the other head boats in the area.
    The mates are decent but I usually bring my own stuff (i.e. rod/reel,
    pliers, fillet knife, tackle, etc.) so I'm fairly self sufficient.

    	I've been out on Smith & Gilmore, Hiltons, Eastmans, and one out of
    Rye that I forget the name of. The one in Rye was doing overnighters
    out to Georges Bank, but at $115 a pop, it's just not worth it to me.

    I'm just looking for any input that people have. I've been fishing with the
    Yankee fleet for about 10 years now and the last 2 years I've seen some
    things that I did not like.

    	I have all my gear and etc also so not looking for much help from
    the mates. Just wondering about the boat? size the average crowds how
    the captains are stuff like that.

367.5Does this help ?VICKI::DODIERSingle Income, Clan'o KidsMon May 09 1994 11:5615
    	As far as boats, Hiltons has the fastest when and if they want to
    use the speed. They have a steel hull (100'er I think) with triple
    diesels.

    	Atlantic FF has two 90' Lydia's (sp?) with twin diesels. They all run
    out and back at about the same speed. Both tend to do more moves than I
    prefer, but then they all do that. The only way to avoid that is to get
    your own boat.

    	The crew on all of the boats I've gone out on varies, but is pretty
    good for the most part. I know that on the Atlantic FF the mates have
    been pretty decent about not cutting my Dacron unless absolutely
    necessary when tangles occur.

Like what ? Just curious, as I also feel that they've gone way downhill
the past few years. Same with my friends and brothers too. On one trip
they opened and searched everyone's coolers for beer, and were very rude
about it. When I take a day off from work for some deep sea fishing, and
I don't get out much with 2 little kids these days, I don't want to be
treated like that. Not to mention a lack of fish (though who's to blame
for that?).

    There have been a lot of little things such as leaving at 7:15 instead
    of 7:00 and returning at 3:30 instead of 4:00. Finding out that a mate
    has called in sick or did not show and they decide to go with 1 mate
    for the day instead of 2.

    	The average ride out to the spot takes 2 hours and sometimes 2plus
    They seem to be in no rush getting there. Several times during the last
    2 years we have found a spot thats pretty good and they decide to pull
    up and go elsewhere even though were catching fish.

    I feel there operations now is not customer friendly. They seem to have
    lost touch with who is paying for these trips.

I hear ya... My brother mentioned that the "good captain(s)" left too.
I'm not positive but I think one of them now runs his own boat - called the
Middlebank - out of Gloucester. I went out with them last year and the year
before and caught the 2 biggest cod I ever caught, all within about 10 miles
from shore. It was a private charter, which I think is all the Middlebank
(about a 50'er) does (should check on that though).

Yankee Fleet used to be the 1st place I'd head for, at least on the Patriot
as opposed to the family-outing-oriented Captain, but not anymore...

Tomorrow I might give the Clipper Fleet another try. Slow boats, but great
chowder. I wanted to try the Nicole Renee again, but they're sold out.

367.9Kudos for the Bunny ClarkXCUSME::TOMASI hate stiff waterThu May 12 1994 15:5614
Although it's been a couple of years since I've been out on a party boat,
I've had great times on the Bunny Clark out of Ogunquit, ME. The boat isn't
too big and accomodates about 30 or so max, but is well equipped. Capt. Tim
is a fairly young guy, has had lots of experience, has a great sense of
humor, but most importantly, has always put us on fish!

Since the boat is small, he usually only has one mate onboard. But I
usually only went on a weekday when the crowds were smaller (15 or less),
so one mate was all that was really needed.

I'd highly recommend him.

fwiw, the winner for number of lunker cod pix in The Fisherman has to be
the Bunny Clark. I don't know if they catch more big fish or take more
pictures of the big fish, but it sounds like the former.

367.11They catch more big fish...SUBPAC::CRONINThu May 12 1994 16:175
RE: .10

	The Bunny Clark has had ~29 IGFA records caught from her deck.

367.12XCUSME::TOMASI hate stiff waterThu May 12 1994 17:2612
The last time I went out, I caught the largest cod (about 16 lbs), as well
as a 38 lb hake. According to Capt. Tim, the world record for hake on
rod 'n reel was about 42 lbs. Shortly after I landed the 38 lber, I
hooked into another fish that was definitely bigger but lost it as it
managed to get into the old wreck we were fishing over (almost 300' of
water!).

Geezz... now that the word is out on the Bunny Clark, I'll probably never
see another weekday crowd of 15 or less!

    Has anyone had any experience with a boat called the Hawk out of

367.14PEROIT::LUCIASo many fish, so little timeMon Jul 25 1994 14:313
Never heard of it. Never seen it fishing either. I've seen most of the head/
charter boats from the North shore area in my time at sea.

367.15???BLUEFN::GORDONMon Jul 25 1994 14:508
I think the Hawk used to advertise in the Fisherman last year and had fishing
reports in that section. I also have never seen them out fishing. I think
that it is a small 6 passenger charter type operation - just a guess from
what I remember reading in the fishing reports.

So I've heard of them but can offer no recommendation good or bad.

    Yep. They are a 6 passenger charter. A cousin of mine from out of
    the area has booked a charter with them later this week and I thought
    I would check them out.

    Thanks for the responses,

    For the Merrimack River you could try Capt. David Scott. He has a
    24-25ft Mako and I've seen him out with charters quite a few times. I
    think he lives in Tewksbury. I don't know anyone who has gone out with
    him so post a report if you go. The name of the boat is the Reel Treat.

367.21Try Sweet Dreams or Bay & Ocean ChartersWMGEN1::abs001p1.nqo.dec.com::SalesRepresentativeFri Aug 11 1995 09:439
I'd use Lew Newsky out of Dover/Portsmouth NH on Bay & Ocean Charters
603.659.3288 before Dave Scott out of Newburyport - if it is catching fish
you are after.

Dave was a good host for guests.

Or Sweet Dream out of Beverly - Bruce is a fisherman's fisherman.
