364.1 | THAMES RIVER STRIPER FISHING | SUBPAC::LYNAM | | Thu Mar 24 1994 15:53 | 35 |
| Butch,
The best fishing location on the Thames right now should be the
Montville power station. I have found that the fishing is real slow if they
are not generating. Other hot spots are American Thermos, FT. Shantok,
and Stoddard's Wharf, all these spots are off route 12. Montville Power
house, Boat Ramp at FT. Dock RD, Tide water, Smith cove and the State
pier, all off route 32. Montville is probably central to the river and
is a good place to start (if they are generating). For the best advice
and bait, stop in at LINSKI enterprises in UNCASVILLE. Take I395 south
to exit 79, hang a left at the stop light, look for LATHROP RD (next to
telephone building). If he looks like he is closed, just ring the door
bell and he will be glad to help you. ~2 blocks north is the Boat Ramp
and one or two blocks south is Montville Power house. Another bait
tackle shop is PHIL'S Bait and Tackle in UNCASVILLE, either of these
shops will be glad to help you out on locations. I suggest driving
both routes 12 and 32 and look for small parking area's with one or
two cars in them, these are usually access points and worth checking
out. Last year about mid April the hot ticket were White (with some
red) bucktails Tipped with half a blood (sea) worm, also Kastmasters
1/2 to 1 oz do fairly well. CONN striper season opens 1 April. Schoolies
start getting pretty thick by mid April with bigger fish showing up about
two weeks later. Also pick up a copy of THE FISHERMAN (New England Edition)
They have several articles every year on this river, and is money well
spent. Later in the Year about June on, cut bait at night can lead to
some really big fish, In August, Blues hit the river chasing herring
and other bait fish up river and can lead to some fast fishing.
The Boat ramp north of LINSKI's is a good one, but you have to watch out
for pilings above/below surface on both sides of the ramp. When launching
and docking go straight at the ramp starting about 100 ft from ramp and
you shouldn't have a problem.

Stewart (aka Culprit)

| Hey Culprit,
Thanks for the info. I'm headed down there tomorrow. Do you have
any ideas about where to pick up a license? I know K-Mart have them
but I'm gonna try to make one trip instead of two. I'll let you know
how we did Monday. Thanks again...

364.3 | K-MART NOT GOOD | SUBPAC::LYNAM | | Thu Apr 07 1994 14:01 | 7 |
| Butch,
K-mart sells licenses, but DOES NOT SELL NON-RESIDENT licenses.
You have to go to any town clerks office to get license. Anyone else
have info on out of state Conn liecenses (I too have yet to pick mine
up).

364.5 | Nonresident licenses | SPESHR::GSMITH | | Fri Apr 08 1994 12:44 | 7 |
| Culprit is correct... Ct nonresident licenses are available at the
town clerk's offices. Some of the town clerk's offices have Sat
morning and/or an evening during the week when they are open. You need
to call and check with each town.

Greg

| As I know it the key is the I95 Bridge. From I95 Bridge to Thames
river mouth you don't need license. From I95 Bridge upriver you need
license.

Butch,
Excellant day's "work" ;^)
Do you or anyone know of public launches near the mouth?
Anyone have knowledge of this river/mouth from the boat perspective?
I'd love to take the FishTeaser down as it's not a bad drive for
me from Oxford.on I-395 but I don't like taking her out on
unfamiliar "turf".

I'd like to know a bit more about this also, if someone wouldn't
mind giving up a secret or two. :^)
I'm thinking of going down after work someday. What's a non-res.
license cost?
Is it better playing the tides? Which tide?
Better after dark or don't it make any difference?
Better with something alive, or are lures almost as good?
My surf casting has been limited to RACE POINT and Salisbury
up until '88 when I started building. Would like to start
getting in some time playing with my toys again. :^)
That's not a bad ride from Webster,Ma. Hour or so down, couple
hours there and back. Good evening out!! :^)
Thanx in advance.

They're catching Bass all across CT and RI. Within a couple weeks
they'll be on the South side of the Cape too.

Fred, As soon as we hear from someone in the know about the
public launch sites then I'm ready to go. I'd still feel
a tad safer with someone aboard who knows the river/mouth.
Or follow another boat ;^)

I don't know the area at all. Totally new to me.
Would just like to know a spot or two to stop and
cast a line, just to finally get away after 4 years
of being tied to the new home.
Contractors just don't like to keep a totally custom
home, custom. So, - we did it ourselves. :^)
Still doing a lot but can afford some time off now.
Maybe I'll see you down there.

Oh... Never mind... :^] I just wanted to make sure people
realized that there are lots of other areas down there that are
presently producing fish, and not just schoolies either! The
Charleston Breachway in RI has already given up a few keepers!
I can't wait to get to some Striper fishing!!! But in the
meantime I guess I'll just have to go to Florida for 10 days of
fishing and beaching!!! Heh, heh, heh....

| B.C.,
I'm thinking about heading down to the breacway and/or Deep Hole
the on Sat. 4/23 or 4/24. I went down last Spring around the same
time and caught three schooiles. My question to you is do you
know what the keepers were taken on and where in the breachway?
I caught two schoolies last Spring on a jig from the end of the
rocks. I also caught a pretty nice size schoolie at deep hole.
Seeing how I'm heading down soon I would appreciate any tips
I can get.
Oh, I almost forgot. Do you know the difference in the times
between high tide on the beach front and high tide in the salt pond
and when the tide starts to ebb from the pond?
Thanks Much,
John

I don't have any of the info here at work. I'll see if I can
convince my wife to dig it out and call me, but I really can't promise
it to you. We leave for Florida tomorrow and things are a little
hectic right now. Of course my son coming home from school sick and
spending the afternoon and last night throwing up didn't help our
preparations any!

Wrong. This is the annual visit the in-laws trip... If I were
going on a fishing trip without the kids it would be northwest of
here... About 4000 miles Northwest of here! But he'd be pissed if
I didn't bring him along on that one too!
Be forewarned... Roy's is not a big shop. He just builds lots of
rods...

| I just talked to my son and looks like he and I may go to the Thames
tommorrow morning. He will stop by the house in Oxford on his way
down from Concord NH.
My objective is to find public launch ramps/bait shops
I have directions to LINSKI's from .1 but would like ramp closer to mouth
My son want's to try out his new rod/reel and the lures I gave him for
his B'day. He's definetly got the bug bad :^)
We will be fishing south of the I-95 bridge as we won't get a license ;^)

| re: -1
Sat 16-Apr my son went down alone. It was too windy for me.
He Fished south of I-95 bridge on East side no luck.
Visited Ken's bait shop and no news of Stripers being caught.
They said the Stripers were upriver and would not be near bridge
for a few weeks.
Sat 23-Apr my wife and I drove down to find ramps.
There are public ramps at each end of the I-95 bridge.
Ample parking, mild pitch to concrete ramp and small wooden floating
dock. More parking on West side of River but East side easier to access.
We stopped at Ken's and checked it out. They were selling seaworms
to locals but not sure where they were going to fish. Noticed
two boats fishing on river one anchored under bridge. No action noticed.
Calm when we arrived but wind picked up and white caps on Thames.
All in all good day of ramp hunting.
Next time we fish ;^)

| My son and I launched the "FishTeaser" on the Thames R. at the
I-95 bridge in Groton, CN at 5:30am. Others launching said schoolies
being caught upriver but you need a license to fish over 500yrds north
of the bridges.
We fished mouth and under bridges with no luck so at 7:30 when Ken's
Tackle shop opened we got two licenses and some sand worms.
Fished all the way upriver as far as Norwich, CN. channle 30'-40' deep
I finally caught a 16" Striper to break the ice after losing one.
Then caught another later in day after losing a second one.
My son had two follow his lure but no hits. Was getting quite depressed
but wanted to catch one on his new rod/reel. Finally at 4:30pm he
caught a 22" Striper. That was all for the day. Not many fish and
not big but a beautiful day on the Thames my first time on it.
All fish caught on small split tail rapala's Black/White.
Twas nice to cruise past 6 Atomic Subs in Dock not counting driving
right alongside the Nautilus 8^0 (....are they big or what!!!!)
