361.1 | Or you could take a night course in leatherwork... | SUBPAC::CRONIN | | Wed Mar 16 1994 14:58 | 8 |
| Jim,
Have you looked in Cabela's or Bass Pro Shops catalogs?
Also, there is a cutlery store in Boston, Quincy Mkt. South Bldg.
downstairs. Largest selection of knives, scissors, etc. that I've seen
in this area. Sorry, don't recall the name of the place.

361.2 | Made from scratch | NUBOAT::HEBERT | Captain Bligh | Wed Mar 16 1994 15:39 | 9 |
| I have a clasp knife with marlinspike (a "Beta Bos'n") that I carried
on my belt when I was in Uncle Sam's Canoe Club. The sheath was made for
me by someone who "did" leatherwork. It's pretty simple, except for the
tooling, which is ornamental. I could let you look at it, and maybe you
could make your own.
I work in ZKO, live in Southern NH.

361.3 | good possibility | MR3MI1::BORZUMATO | | Wed Mar 16 1994 16:51 | 9 |
| I've had leather sheaths in the past, they do ok, but the salt
isn't very kind to the leather and any hardware.
I was leaning toward nylon with a velcrose clasp.
any other thoughts,

361.4 | Shouldn't be a problem... | SUBPAC::CRONIN | | Thu Mar 17 1994 08:16 | 7 |
| Jim,
I would think that a generic nylon/velcro sheath would be easy to
find... Something's telling me I saw some in the Eddie Bauer store
this weekend...
Let me dig through some catalogs for you...

361.6 | How about plier sheaths? | NEMAIL::GREENBERG | | Thu Mar 17 1994 09:40 | 12 |
| Offshore Angler catalog, page 86 has sheaths for pliers which might
work for you. There are 4 different ones in varying lengths. Prices run
from $4.99-5.99. Offshore Angler # is: 1-800-633-9131.
I have another catalog from a place called Charlie's Tackle in
Dartmouth, MA. Charlie has a variety of plier sheaths as well and some
leather knife sheaths. Charlie's # is: 508-636-3255.
Hope this info helps.

I had one custom made a few years back at a cobbler shop.
They have the leather and the machinery. I don't recall
the cost tho'.
Take the thing down to one and see.

| i called the 800 no. listed, and spoke with ther product info specialist.
this guy was really informed, and certainly took the time to explain
a few things.
The first thing he mentioned was he has none for the knife i bought,
they only carry sets.
Secondly, a leather knife case on a boat is not a good idea, unless
it was cured properly, salt residue remains in the leather,
we all know what salt will do.
He recommended using seat belt material, and have someone? sew it.
This material breathes, and should serve the purpose well
Damn seat belt law///////

| Saturday morning i decided to try the upholstery shop in maynard.
Found they were closed, wondered over to the Outdoor Store on main
st. and found 2 nylon knife cases, obviously i bought one.
They do not normally carry these, i have been there before.
They stock a large selection of Buck knives, and leather cases for
them.
Thanks for all the suggestions,
JIm

| Jim,
I know it's too late, but... One of my informants told me that the
latest Overton's catalog has a rigging knife with a marlin spike and
there is an optional sheath to go with it.
