This past week, I spent 5 days down in southern Florida. While there we booked a half day trip to go for sailfish. What a blast. We caught several kingfish, plus hooked into one sail. I have never seen a fish take as much line, as quickly as this fish did. The capt. of the boat said that it was around 72" long from tail to mouth. My buddy worked it for around 30 minutes before it threw the hook. when the fish first hit, it jumped at least ten times. If you ever get the chance, go. You won't regret it. Jeff

JEFF I WILL IN GOING TO FLA. IN MID-MAY (14-28TH). I WAS THERE LAST YEAR THE LAST WEEK IN APRIL FIRST WEEK IN MAY. TALKING TO LOCAL BAIT SHOP THE SEASON HAD JUST ENDED FOR MOST CHARTER BOATS. MY DATES ARE PLANNED AROUND THE FAMILY BUT I WILL SURF/BRIDGE FISH WHILE I'M THERE. WHAT DOES A CHARTER BOAT FOR SAIL FISH COST? IT HAS ALWAYS BEEN MY DREAM TO FIGHT A FISH FOR MORE THEN A FEW MINUTES. GENERAL

To the best of my recollection, the sailfish season in Florida is in the winter months. It's supposed to be particularly good after a cold front has moved through. Offshore in May, you might get dolphin, wahoo, kingfish, depending on where you are in Florida. Not knowing exactly where you are going, it would be hard to tell you what the charters cost. But the rates cluster more or less around: $300-350 for a half day (4 hours) $450-550 for a full day (8 hours) Most are 6 people max. Those are approximate rates from the times I went out of Miami and Islamorada in the Keys. You can also do some pretty good backcountry fishing for a whole lot less money. You won't catch a sail, but could catch tarpon, snook, redfish, trout. Small boat -- maybe 2 or 3 passengers. Short run to the fish. Lots of backcountry guides in the Keys and on the West Coast. Hope this info helps. Art
353.3 | No good for Sails, great for Tarpon | TOOK::PAQUET | Fri Mar 11 1994 14:27 | 10
April-May is prime tarpon season. While I have never caught a sailfish (I do have a small marlin to my credit), I have hooked and fought a tarpon for well over an hour. Tarpon are often hooked by people fishing on bridges, and are never brought to shore! There are lots of fish available like Jack Crevalle which can give you a hard time. regards ray |
