343.0. "Locations for Smelt AND Lakers" by NEMAIL::PETERSEN () Thu Feb 03 1994 11:23

Where can I rent an Ice shack for Smelting and laker fishing etc.?

Prices, phone #'s, location, etc... ???

Or- where can I go and put up my own portable shanty?

I went once on Lake Champlain several years ago, we rented shantys and
had a great time. Would like to go again, but closer if possible.
I've been reading the notes and noticed you fish the tides as opposed
to just going out and "setting up" .

    Recommendations?

    Thanks

    Erik

A few of us went up to Maine a few weeks ago and rented a 4-man shack on
the Eastern River in Dresden, Maine. From the Portsmouth circle off Rt 95,
it us about 2-2.5 hours, so it's a haul. But it was worth it! Between the
4 of us, we picked up about 450 smelt in about 4-5 hrs. Of course, your
mileage can vary depending on the tide, mood, weather, etc.

The shacks are well heated with a kerosene stove, plus electric lights (but
not quite up to code!). Cost was $8 per person plus $1 for a bag of bait.

Here's the info for reservations:

	James' Eddy Smelt Camps
	On Eastern River at
	Rte. 127, Dresden, ME
	(207) 737-2596

Good luck and let us know if you go.
