331.0. "surf rod guide sets...... source for?" by BUSY::JWHITTEMORE (Carp Perdiem) Thu Dec 02 1993 08:32

I'm rebuilding a surf rod and need a mail order source for guide sets. I'd
prefer mail order or a retail LOCAL to Marlboro / Shrewsbury .....

331.1Guide sets and other rod building stuff...SUBPAC::CRONINThu Dec 02 1993 11:3112
    	RE: .0

    	Depending on just what you're looking for you could start at
    Spag's. They have lots of stuff behind the counter, you have to ask
    for it and you have to be patient... Not all of them know what they're
    doing!
    	Mail order... Call Cabela's, they have everything you need.

    	If you happen to be going to the Cape stop at Red Top, they have
    everything that's needed for rod building, at least for SW.

331.2Try in WestboroTOLKIN::KILEYThu Dec 02 1993 12:245
    You could try the tackle shop in Westborough. It is located in
    downtown next to Westboro Tire. A rod builder has his equioment at one
    end of the store.

331.3a little more on Westboro please...BUSY::JWHITTEMORECarp PerdiemThu Dec 02 1993 15:527

Dale Clemens has size 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, 20, 24 unbraced
and 30, 40, 50, 60 and 75 braced Perfection Stainless/Chrome
guides in his catalog - (215) 395-5119. Maybe not on a par
with Red Top but Kaye up at Surfland on Plum Island has a
substantial assortment of this stuff. I don't have her phone
number handy but it is probably in this file somewhere. She
is quite a few casts away from central Mass though.

	I think they're out of business, which is too bad! They had
	a good sw selection for Shrewsbury...

331.7I think All Pro Tackle is the place ??SHIBA::MATTSONFri Dec 03 1993 14:397
    First off Dick's Tackle was in Worcester not Shrewsbury. Yes, he is
    out of business. The place someone else was talking about in Westboro,
    I believe is All Pro Tackle, their phone number is 508-366-2235 & 508-366
    -2174. The guy making the rods is Earl. I've seen his work with G
    Loomis rods at a couple of shows, he does a good job at a reasonable
    price.

    No intent on starting a "rat hole", but I thought someone told
    me (quite some time back) that Dicks tackle had moved to that
    little plaza just before the boat ramp on RT-20, if you were
    eastbound.

    I never bought anything from him.

    Dick passed away, his son took over and it went down hill from there.
    unfortunatly he sold moslty everything to off to immediate friends etc.
    thats why there was no big going out of business sale.

    the little plaza before the boat ramp on rte 20, has been there for
    Eons. and is still running.

    in EMAIL if you want his number, he most likely has them in stock. he
    lives in RI just over the mass bordor.

331.11Not totally out of business.JUPITR::BUTCHNo Shortcut Too ShortMon Dec 06 1993 13:185
    	I talked to Wayne, Dick's son and he is still in business but
    just the wholesale end. Too busy for all the other stuff. Plus he's
    said that the $$ wasn't there to justify the sales part of the
    business.

331.13Where to buy guides, etc.NEMAIL::GREENBERGWed Dec 08 1993 08:3842
    Here are some mail-order sources for rod-building supplies:

    Charlie's Custom Rods & Tackle
    PO Box 74
    Dartmouth MA 02714
    508-636-3255

    This is a "mom and pop" mail order operation. Charlie also builds
    custom rods and sells blanks, guides, reel seats, grips, etc. I'm sure
    he would have a set of guides that would work for you. He's a good guy.
    I've bought stuff from him before and I've always been pleased with his
    knowledge and service.

    Angler's Workshop
    1350 Atlantic
    Woodland WA 98674
    206-225-9445

    This is a great place to buy blanks and rod building supplies. The only
    problem is they are pretty far away. But they have the best selection
    I've seen anywhere. They are situated right next door to the Lamiglass
    factory so they can get any type of Lamiglass blank quickly. Their
    selection of guides is great. Service is good and they will spend the
    time with you to make sure you get the right stuff.

    Tackle Chandlers
    PO Box 1871-SW
    Centerville VA 22020

    I used to buy blanks from them years ago, but haven't recently. I think
    they are a pretty good operation and have a good selection. I don't
    have a phone number for them.

    I'd try Charlie's first to get guides since he is the closest. If he
    doesn't have what you want, I'm sure Angler's Workshop will. Hope this
    info is useful.

331.14Joe Cote's in LeicesterSPESHR::GSMITHWed Dec 08 1993 14:5517
    Another place that carries rod building supplies is Joe Cote's Fly Shop
    in Leicester. Although he caters to Fly Fisherman, Joe does carry some
    rod building components for all types of rods. Joe sell Gary Loomis
    blemished blanks at a great price. The current rate is $8.50/ft for
    the Loomis blanks. If you are looking for something specific call him
    to see if he has it.
