326.0. "Salmon Eggs For Trout, Borax,Freeze,No Freeze?" by KYOA::LUIZZA () Wed Sep 01 1993 22:36

I have a question on salmon eggs for the fishing crew. I was up at the
BIG O the other day and one of the guys caught a 32 lb female salmon.
She was full of eggs which I brought home in prep for a special outing
that is planned for a copule of weeks from now. They told me to BORAX
    the eggs to preserve them.

Question is how long will they last unfrozen, or should they be frozen
at all? I know the guide that we go with up there uses the salmon eggs
for stream fishing later in the fall but I forgot to ask him if he deep
freezes them or just does the long time preserve in Borax in the
    fridge.

The special outing that I have planned is a group of people from ARC
the association of retarted citizens going to the state fish hatchery
for a fishing lesson in their stocked training pond. Last year they had
nothing less than 19" get caught and the largest was 8lbs and 28"
trout. It is a real thrill to help these special people catch fish. The
secret ticket last outing was trout eggs so I can't see why salmon egg
    clusters won't work.

326.1Check the ones they sellVICKI::DODIERFood for thought makes me hungryFri Sep 03 1993 13:427
Just a thought but if you can find some real bottled salmon-eggs
(i.e. Patzuewcky's (sp?) Balls of Fire), maybe they mark the bottle with
what they keep them in. I know that these things will last a year+ in
whatever they put them in, so long as you keep the bottle closed
and don't let them dry out.

I heard adding Raspberry Jell-O mix to them makes 'em killer - really!

Just checked my state of Washington lake and river guide and it states:

    	1. cut the skeins in strips and cover with borax and refrigerate
between paper towel to absorb moisture for 2-3 days

    	2. then cut into chunks and place in peanut butter jars with more
borax for up to 2 weeks in refrig

    	3. if longer time is needed you can freeze 'em
after cutting into chunks and boraxing

    	4. you may want to separate single eggs out if you can,
here rule of thumb if eggs are wetter (closer to laying) more
    	   borax is required

Also what you dont use you can chum with at least here in Washington
state. Had a mighty steelhead straighten a small gold hook last fall
    on a single egg.

    Good luck!

Thanks for the tips on the care of the eggs. I'll let you know how the
outing that I'm going to use them on goes.

    Thanks again,
