321.0. "Spofford Lake, NH" by ROBOAT::HEBERT (Captain Bligh) Mon Aug 09 1993 12:37
My son and I visited Spofford Lake in New Hampshire this weekend. It was
my first visit, his third. He fished Spofford this past May and was quite
impressed with it. Back then he saw northern pike about 24" long sunning
themselves.
Clark's Fishing Guide has this info on Spofford: 312 acres, mean depth
33'; rainbow trout, northern pike, smallmouth bass are the major
fisheries. It has one island and several small shoal areas. Excellent
launch ramp off Rt. 9A, and equally excellent parking area for vehicles
with trailers.
Bottom line: we caught a couple of small (10"-12") smallmouth bass. We
marked quite a few fish at 18' to 22'. According to Clark's, this is
about where the % of disolved oxygen peaks.
Comments: we won't visit this lake again until late September or October.
It's owned by water skiers and jetskis and general jerks. One guy in a 6'
inflatable with an outboard circled us while we were casting toward the
island. Another guy, in a canoe, paddled up to within four feet(!) of my
little Johnson as we were casting toward a weed bed off our port side. He
back-paddled and said "can I pass to your left?" 312 acres and he wanted
to go under our lines. It was a challenge for him, I guess.
