That depends on a whole slew of variables. Size/shape/weight/water resistance
of the jig itself, water resistance of any plastic or pork trailer, line
diameter/#test, current, wind, etc. Are you asking the right question? Do you
want to know how heavy to go for more specific conditions? I always use the
lightest jig I can, whether it's 1/8 or 1/16 oz smallie fishing or 6-21 oz cod
jigs. If I can fish a 6-12 oz jig for cod (even in 250'+), I will 'cause they
catch more fish.

Think about it.

312.2Hopkins in the surf - How?WSPBU::SAMARASNew England: July-August & winterWed Jun 30 1993 11:4914
I see lots of stuff written about using a Hopkins lures for surfcasting.
Usually with some bucktail on the hook.

What's the best technique for retrieving when surfcasting? I usually go for
stripers. Should you really "whip" it in? Slow? Fast? Erratic? Bounce the
bottom?

I have good luck with Rapala's, and medium luck with bucktail leadheads.

Are Hopkins effective at night? I'd like to get good at using them because
they cast like rockets.

thanks,
...bill

All of the above ;-)

Seriously, experiment...It varies with the conditions at hand.

p.s. Just when you figure out what they want, it will change.
