308.0. "Michigan Anglers ..." by OLHEAP::JFISCHER (Jim - OpenVMS Partner in Detroit) Fri Jun 18 1993 12:14

I'm starting this string of as a focal point for the Michigan anglers. Please
note the keyword: MICHIGAN. This keyword should be applied to any entry (in
this string or any other) that refers to fishing the inland waters in Michigan.

Another, similar, string has also been started with the keyword GREAT_LAKES.
That keyword should be used for any entry referring to fishing the Great Lakes
(from any of the US states or Canadian provinces that touch the Great Lakes).

General questions and comments should, of course, be placed in the most
appropriate topic elsewhere in this conference. Please limit entries to this
string to information that would be of specific interest to Michigan anglers.

For example:

WALLED Lake is a private lake. You have to live there to fish it. If you try
and fish it without being a resident, you are rudely asked to leave (don't ask
me how I know!).

FORD Lake in Ypsilanti (that's a name of a city) seems to attract a lot of
fisherman, but I've never had much luck there. Just a few crappie and an 8" LM.
Going down river a few miles to Belleville Lake is a good move. It's much more
productive. I've been told by the locals that you don't want to eat anything
from either of these lakes.

308.1Alan LakeOLHEAP::JFISCHERJim - OpenVMS Partner in DetroitMon Jun 21 1993 10:577
Got a ride on a friends boat last Friday Evening. He took me to Alan Lake in
the Irish Hills area. Actually, Alan Lake is a sting of 5 small lakes with
cannals connecting them together. Nice place, all the sign of a good fishing
spot are there, good weed beds, clean water, plenty of shore weeds, water depth
ranged from a few feet to 32 ft but no fish. There were a few, but they were
little (caught 4 10" LM). It seemed to me that these lakes have been over
stressed. I'll right Alan Lake off for the next couple of years.

    Jim,

    "Walled Lake"....North of Novi? I was in training a few years ago and
    took my rods with me. After class one evening I got out the map and
    decided to drive to Walled Lake to fish. I drove around the lake
    trying to find a place that wasn't posted and ran across a house that
    was being built right on the water. There were lilly pads all along
    the backside so I put on a buzz bait and caught a 15" largemouth on the
    second cast. I got a few other hits but couldn't hook them.

    It was to the left of the spillway the first second dirt road on the
    right after looping around the lake.

    A couple of days later I went with a couple of guys that worked in Novi
    to a gravel pit about 10 miles out on the west side. We caught several
    bass, one of the guys caught a 3lber on a tiny torpedo.

    I am heading for Pentwater Mich on the 17th of July and can't wait. I
    love fishing there. You can always catch something.

308.3BUDD LAKE, MichiganOLHEAP::JFISCHERJim - OpenVMS Partner in DetroitMon Aug 23 1993 18:249
Fished Budd Lake in Harrison Michigan for the first time this weekend. Not a bad
lake, lots of Blue Gill for the kids and some small Perch. I caught some LM Bass
(13 to 15 inches) and was told that there were Muskie in the lake. The lake is
weedy to the point where crank baits (especially trolling) are a pain. We caught
everything on worms/crawlers and leeches.

However, the number of water skiers, jet skiers, and power boats made this
little lake a mess. Fish it during the week, early morning or late night, or
on bad weather days to avoid the wakes.

When I was a kid my family used to go to the U.P. just south of Wetmore for our
vacation every year. I would like to go back there this September to fish those
lakes again. The two lakes I remember most are McKever (sp) and Bass Lake. I
would also go try Chicago Lake. I don't remember this lake, but it is where I
caught my first fish 39 years ago.

Has anyone fished those lakes in the last few years? If so, how was the fishing
and the condition of the lauches? I am concerned about dragging my 18' boat
out there and not being able to get it in the water.

Also, if anyone can recomend a place to stay, that would also be appreciated.

308.5Chicagon LakeANGLIN::LEONARDIWed Aug 25 1993 19:0113
    If you are referring to Chicagon Lake in Iron County (between Iron
    River and Crystal Falls) it is a very pretty, deep, clear water lake.
    It is known mostly for its Muskie & Walleyes. I camped there this past
    June with my wife and kids. The water was cold but we caught plenty of
    panfish and a few smallmouths as well. The lake is over 100' deep in
    the center.
    Pentoga Park is the campground adjacent to the lake with wonderful
    facilities. The launch was nothing special but I had no problems
    with my 18 ft Ranger. There are a ton of lakes within an hour of this
    one if you get bored.
