292.0. "Rods & Reels" by OLHEAP::JFISCHER (Jim - OpenVMS Partner in Detroit) Thu May 13 1993 12:24

I'm thinking about buying a new reel. Anybody have any advice regarding the
Zebco HyperCast?

 What kind of reel is it? Is it a regular spinning reel, an ultralight, etc?

    I understand they are having a problem with the plastic lip you
    pullback to open the bail. This piece of plastic is very thin and it
    just snaps. I'm sure they will fix it next year, I would wait.

I couldn't wait. My brother-in-law was interested in buying my old rod & reel
off me (the one I didn't like much), so I was left with only my kids equipment
to use (a Zebco-101_100%_plastic_won't_last_the_season reel and a
Fisher_Price_wish_I_had_never_bought_it kiddie rod).

The Hypercast feels good and works well. I'll keep an eye on the trigger and
will reply here is there are any problems.

P.S. I've been skunked, but it sure is fun to watch your 6 year old son bring
     in a 14", 2 lb LM Bass. 'Course, now he claims to be the 'real' fishman
     in the family and '...Dad just practices' (how can I argue).
292.4Algonquin: by Diawa...POLAR::KFICZEREWed Apr 09 1997 00:4520
    	Well, I was a little bored today so I thought I'd mosey on down to
    my favorite tackle shop (Le Barons!) and just *may be* pick out a
    couple of crankbaits for my "new, from Santa" Plano box. Of, course I
    start looking around and remember cat'n and pike'n is just a couple of
    weeks away and I can't fish for big fish with a little fish rig. Out
    comes the VISA.....DO'H!!
    	To make a long story short, I walked out of the store with an
    ABU 6501-C baitcaster and an Algonquin AL-gaphite series rod. The reel
    is quite a common unit for this application and I pretty much new I
    would end up with one sooner or latter ($112 Can.)...nice.
    	As for the rod, it was too good a deal to pass up. $43 and
    change...perfect.
    Here's my question: Has anyone heard of Algonquin rods? It says
    "imported for Diawa" in the "specs" area. Its rated 15-30lb. test,
    1 1/2 to 6oz's. It's very, very light (I compared it to a Fenwick Musky
    series at twice it's price), 6'6". I think I did quite well...

    Bring on the FISH!!!!!!
