274.4 | Try an egg sinker | MSBCS::MERCIER | | Fri Mar 19 1993 10:32 | 22 |
| The set ups used by most people for lakers during the first few weeks
of the season are a good casting rod set up with an egg sinker and
shiner.
--------------0------oo------------------<==~
line egg barrel 24" to 36" favorite
sinker swivel leader bait (usually a large live
shiner)
This set up will allow you to cast further, get down to the bottom
where the lakers are 90% of the time and allow the laker to run with
the bait. While using this set up you must leave your bail open. When
the fish takes it the line will run through the egg sinker with little
resistance. The general rule is to count to 10, close the bail and set
the hook.
I have caught a couple of 8 pounders, a few five pounders and numerous
1 to 3 pounders. Have yet to catch the big one and to make matters
worse. The fishing has seemed to have gone down hill the last 3 to 4
years.
Hope this helps

fishing wasn't. I'd go back there again for a foliage trip with

I couldn't resist this time !!
I'm usually a reader and not a writer in this conference But !!!
Wachusett has some of the biggest fish in the State swimming in it!
Several current state records come from its waters. I for one caught the
largest Smallmouth in the state in 1985 @ an unofficial 7# 2oz. and
a state certified 6# 6oz.
Most of the Guys I fish Wachusett with have all caught Smallies in
excess od 5 lbs.
I know people who have done very well for lake trout there. I havn't
myself.
I feel it's a pretty hard place to fish. But you have to keep pluggin'
It is a large body of water with no boat fishing at all. No ice fishing
at all.
Imagine what the fishing would be like even if the state opened it up
to canoes or electric trolling motors like they do on Washacum!
I feel you would undoubtably have the best fishing in the state for a
long time. You pretty much do now !!!
You've got to pay your dues...............................Steve

How about a small remote control boat that you could send your bait out
on ? drop it off the boat where you want it...and then recall the boat
back to you.....
The thing with the kite is you would always have to have a wind that is
off shore....might be a bit of a problem at times!

| The MDC has the rules set up so -no- boats, not even little remote
control types can be used... (Bummer)
Could be a problem trying to use a kite... It's so hilly around
the shoreline that if you did have an offshore wind you'd most likely
be sitting in dead calm air. Of course there are a few spots like the
causeways and a few points that might work.
Long (I mean -long-) ago Paul Kukonen spent years trying to get the
MDC to at least do a study on the feasability of a canoe/rowboat
fishery there. It was just an exercise in frustration, they wouldn't
even think about thinking about it!!!

I know some time ago say maybe 10 years or the MDC was also thinking
about opening it up to ice fishing. I guess they thought better against
it,because it never happened.
I have seen people arrested for fishing off the dykes. Also I know of
2 individuals who were hammering largemouths fishing at night.
Eventually they were caught by the Clinton Police, thrown out of the
area, but never arrested or prosicuted.
Also I think that they should go back to the old days when you had
to go to the Clinton Dam and pay a buck ($1.00) to get a permit to
fish. I remember that the entire area was very clean then.

| There actually a small unit with a prop and a battery that is big
enough to push a line and lure out to some preset distance. Spag sells
them. I often thought of these units when fishing the Wachusetts. It
seems always that the biggest jumps are about 10 yards from your
fartherst cast.
I have stood on the shore and seen monster smallies swimming the break
lines. I mean monster smallies. But that water is so clear its hard
to fool them with aritificials.

thing you would see as far as trash gos is LINE and broken

containers, coffee cups, just plan ole' crap! I do belive
some of it does blows in from the causeway (near hotdog truck).
But lets face it, theres alot carried in, not much carried out.
I've said it before, some day the wrong people with walk the
shores see the litter and there will be no more fishing.
I can just feel it.

The beed prevents the egg sinker from smashing the knot
that is tied to the swivel. Sunday I used a 3/4 oz egg, the
hole dia was quite a bit larger than my knot, so a beed was
not necessary. Actually now that I think about it, if you
broke down your setup everytime after you fished i'd bet
it would never be a problem (because of limited casting).

274.39 | Try this | MSBCS::MERCIER | | Mon Jul 26 1993 12:05 | 29 |
| Paul,
I've just returned from Moosehead Lake in Maine. The fishing was
fantastic. I'm still in a state of shock!!! For the week we totaled
20 landlocks and 5 togue (lake trout for us flat landers).
It rained every day up there for at least a 1/2 an hour off an on all
day. The strange part was on Monday we had a wind about 20 miles an
hour directly out of the south. On Tuesday and the rest of the week it
turned North by North West. This created the most beautiful salmon chop
I have ever seen. Our nextdoor neighbor had gone out Saturday night and
said he got a bunch. It turned out he was pulling my chain but he had
given me the inspiration to go.
Anyways to get to your question the Salmon were biting anywhere from 6
to 10 colors. The lakers 10 + (roughly 40'). From the sounds of it you
will not have this equipment :^(...... On the bright side we caught 3
salmon from shore (2 keepers 1 short) on a bobber with a worm. What we
would do is put the bobber about 15' up from the worm and then paddle
out from shore about 100' and drop it. Return back to shore with the
poles and wait.
I never would of believed that it would work but it did. I'm sure the
egg sinker would work quite well also depending on quite a bit of
variances where you are. Try both, the salmon seem to be partial to
floating baits.
Good luck and let me know how you do.

| The intersting thing about the location of those salmon catches and the
smallies is the technigue used to catch them. I talked to a very
knowledable old timer and he told me the way to do this is as follows:
Go to the bridge there that seperates the resevoir from the river. Get
live bait suspend it 1-2 feet below the surface, use a large float and
let the current from the river move the bait out away from shore to the
deeper water you could not normally cast to.
All that made lots of sense, but I hate fishing with live bait that you
have to drop and wait so I never tried it. Give it a whirl and see
what happens.

| < live bait suspend it 1-2 feet below the surface, use a large float and
< let the current from the river move the bait out away from shore to the
< deeper water you could not normally cast to.
My father-in-law one day watched this guy use an RC (radio controlled) boat
to carry his live bait out well beyond casting range at Wachusett. I don't
think it was legal but is was clever.
My father-in-law used a small stone attached to his line with a sugarcube
right down close to the shiner. He used a surf rod and the weight of the stone
to hurl that sucker way the hell out there. Once the sugarcube hit the water it
would dissolve and the rock would be free to drop to the bottom leaving the
shiner swimming free and relatively un-injured by the cast.
Down here in Florida some people use kites to do basically the same thing.
Attach your line and bait to a small kite. Then fly the kite out over the lake,
release the line from the kite (usually via a clothespin) and then reel in the
kite and fish. Haven't tried it myself, but what the heck all you'd need is a
slight wind to your back.

274.53 | How 'bout training some racing pigeons? | USCTR1::HAMELIN | | Wed Aug 30 1995 13:38 | 17 |
| Thanks for the suggestions! Brian the technique you mentioned reminds
me of the method we use for striper fishing on Martha's Vineyard. It
works well in Menemsha and at Mink Meadows where the tidal change and
jetties provide for this very very lazy man's kind-of-fishing. Wish I
was there chasing bonita 8^)
Now about that radio controlled boat... I foresee a whole new sport for
techies - outfit these boats like tuna boats but with remote control
tackle. The object is to catch large pan fish via remote control and
return your boat w/ catch to derby headquarters for weigh in and
release. This would combine the fun of RC, with the fun of PC game
fishing while testing the skills and talent of the operator. In theory,
it seems better than racing pigeons!
All-in-all, I think I'll stick to the basics.
Hope you all have a great Labor-less Day weekend!

due to opening of sluces. Seemed a bit far fetched, but thats
where the "BIG" fish were located.

| I have seen small battery operated propellar like things you tie to
your line and then it powers the bait out where you want it to go, you
tug on a seperate line and it drops the baited line off and you can
pull back in the little boat like thing. they hit spags a few years
back then I haven't seen them since. I'll bet you could probably make
one easy enough with one of those model ship type motors, not the
expensive radio units but the type that goes in platic toy boats. If
you think about it all you need is a battery operated propeller on a
small float with a rudder to send it straight out. Some kind of a
quick release catch that is attached to another fishing line. When
your little float gets there you yank the line and the lure drops back
and you can bring it back to shore.

The RC boat question has been asked before and the answer is
"No boats of any kind"
Does it make sense? No, not in my opinion. They don't care
about making sense. They'll ticket you for walking in the water
with waders on, but they ignore all the folks picnicing and feeding
the geese near the stone church... They have to walk past the sign
that says No Anything But Fishing Or Walking Allowed... That's not
really what it says, but the list of prohibited actions doesn't leave
anything else! Selective enforcement...
Just learn the reservoir, and expect to do some walking. There
are places where you can cast into almost 100ft. of water, and there
are the usual places that concentrate fish. River mouths, points,
bridges in causeways... Why do you think they're catching fish near
the Stone Church? The church sits on a point adjacent to a bridge
under the causeway. This is the old Quinapoxet(sp?) and Stillwater
River channel!
My 2 cents worth,

BC you got no sense of humor at all!!!!
This fantasy could have gone on for at least another week;-);-)
HOWEVER, just because the MDC frowns on it a Wachusett doesn't mean you can't
use these tricks in other places where the cops have a better disposition.

| How far do you need to cast? Can you use the reverse cast that I see
being used on the beachs. What they seem to be doing is casting in the
wrong direction (180 deg) then when the line is about 50% out turning
around and fliping back in the right directions. The cast seems to go
2 to 3x the distance of a normal cast for the same weight. I always
wanted to try it but never seem to be in an area where room enought
behind. It looked like they were waiting untill the line
reach a certain height before turning around and fiping it back..
Not reponsible for hooking guards etc...:)

If you whip live bait you will find the hook and sinker going one way
and your shiner about a mile further.

Fishing Wachusetts is always fun especially in the wee hours of the
morning. I have waded hip deep in freezing mornings to cast the bait
out there to watch the fish jumping about 5 yards beyond my illegal
cast.

Use a long (7-10ft.) soft rod. Not -too- soft, you want to
be able to cast at least 1oz. Use a reel that will hold at least
200yds. of 8lb. test. Light line so you can cast it further and
plenty of it cause the Lakers in there get pretty big!
Going in waist deep... Hmmm... That would be about 1-2 steps
in most of the areas people fish for Trout. Personally, I'll
settle for my cast being 6ft. shorter thankyou! In fact, in some
of the spots one step will put you down a cliff and into 30ft. of
water!
Here's a couple places. The Stone Church (really), the other
side (not end) of the causeway under the power lines and the next
shoreline after the cove, the cemetery off Rt. 110 (long walk),
Rt. 140 across from the old landfill (another long walk), Rt. 70
the gate just N of the high school, Rt. 70 Main St. Circle (very
hilly and lots of ledge both above and below water), behind the
W Boylston Fire Station. That ought to keep you guys busy for
a few years.

You don't know my secret place to fish do you, always catch some nice
trout there and yes you can wade waist deep by stepping 5-10 feet from
shore, however right now with this drought I'll bet you can move
10-15 feet from shore. I agree though, most of the trout spots drop
right off, a few feet from shore.

You think I gave you everything I know about Wachusett???
My, my, you -do- make me laugh! All I gave was a quick rundown
of -some- of the most popular spots. No, I don't claim to know
everything about the place, but over the years I've walked the
-whole- shoreline, so I know a little bit about it... I've
fished there since back when you needed a permit... And that's
the 25 CENT permit, not the $1 one! It's only a 20 minute bicycle
ride from where I grew up!
Secret spots on Wachusett!! I love it!!!

Are you kidding me, BC was one of those guys who used the double
handled saw to cut the timber down to help build the damn that created
the resevoir in the first place. I understand from the Legend that BC
walked the woodland before they flooded it so he would understand where
the dropoffs and structure would be once the resevoir filled.
Old ain't applicable to BC. Ancient or relic comes more readily to
mind 8^)

I don't know about that, but I'll bet he's been into the Deacon's Bench
in Oakdale more than once and studied the old pictures of the construction...
Being a student at the Tahanto High School back in the mid-60's, we used
to run Cross Country out through the watershed and across the reservoir's
shoreline. We even had one guy who packed his SCUBA gear back there one
afternoon. Any idea how good that cool water feels after you've been running
through the woods for 30 minutes??? I get refreshed just thinking about it.
"Sorry coach, I was just running along the shoreline like everyone else, but
I slipped...honest coach I didn't mean to fall in the water, and I don't swim
very well so it took me about 10 minutes to dog-paddle my way back to shore";-)

| For those of you who don't agree with the recent header in this file
"Not much left now" in today's Worcester Telegram they are reporting
the extension of the season at Wachusett Resevoir. It has been extended
through November 30th...... This is the time of year when you'll have
your best shot at a Trophy Laker, Smallmouth and Landlocked Salmon.
Now if we could only make up our minds.......Pheasant/Grouse Hunting or
Salmon fishing or lunker Smallmouth action or maybe some slow paced
Laker fishing. That's only locally!!! Then the debate moves onto
Archery Hunting, King Salmon/Steelhead fishing (Lake Ontario) or a
Yellow Fin Tuna trip to the Canyons for some arm wrenching Fun!!!!!!!!!
Tough Choices to make
