257.0. "Great Lakes Trout/Salmon" by CSOA1::VANDENBARK () Mon Feb 01 1993 14:47

I have a question for some of you "Great Lakes fishermen". I have been
fishing on Lake Michigan for about 18 years now (one week a year) and
have been wondering about a few things. Last year while I was out with
a friend on his Charterboat we ran across a school of fish that seemed
to be huge. We marked stacked fish for several minutes. We were
trolling J-plugs and Northport Nailers(6" spoons) and failed to pick up
a single fish through the school. We later boated 6 coho and chinook.

    My question is this:

Has anyone ever tried live shiners or jigs on the suspended fish? I
don't think I have ever seen anyone do anything but troll out in the
big lake. I guess I have bass fishing on the brain, but it seems to me
that you could nail the lakers as well as salmon by doing this.

In my opinion, nothing beats the feeling of a fish actually nailing a
lure while you are holding the rod.

    What do you think?

Though not the Great Lakes, when I pass over suspended salmon in our larger
Colorado lakes and not get a hit I'll try jigging a kastmaster. This has
worked pretty good on them. One thing I've noticed is you cann't seem to
troll slow enough for salmon. When jigging they would only take a slow jig
and hit it on the drop.

I second that.
