Don,
Bass haven't been legal at the Winnie Derby for at least 3-4 years. This
year is the first year that brown trout have been restricted.
So what's the scoop? You gonna make it with us again this year?

| So what's to fish for? Togue, salmon, and cusk? Smelt?
Is ice on the lake yet?

| As I recall, there's 6 species included. Grand prize of $18K boat/motor
and trailer is for largest tagged laker or rainbow. If no tagged fish are
brought in, then it's largest laker ( => 24").
Payoffs also for top fish for cusk, rainbow, laker, yellow perch, white perch
and pickeral (did I miss any?). Total of $40K in prizes.
Who else is planning to fish this tourney?

| Yes, I'm going to try and fish. I'd like to find out what the rules are
about staying overnight on the ice. Assuming we significantly more ice
than last year, I'd like to talk my neighbor into bringing his little
camper up there for the weekend. Otherwise we'll go in on a place like we
did last year.
Besides saving the expenses of renting a place, the camper, even though it's
a real small one, is alot roomier than my porta-shack!

| Don,
I'm not aware of any rules about staying on the ice overnight. The ice
last year really was plenty thick, but even so, I'd be concerned about
leaving the truck in one spot for such a long period of time. Folks
suggest that you should periodically move your vehicle as the ice tends
to "sag" after a while. Although you may not break through, you could
end up in a deep "bowl" that you wouldn't be able to make it up the
slope (ha ha).
What expenses?? $30-35 a nite for the room, split between 2-3 guys
works out pretty cheap.

239.6 | ok to sleep on the ice (well, probably not exactly ON the ice..." | RANGER::MACINTYRE | Terminal Angler | Wed Dec 09 1992 13:25 | 10 |

I wasn't aware of any rules against sleeping out on the ice either.
I wanted to make sure so I called fish and game to confirm. They said
no problem, and that its always done during the winni derby. (I
hadn't mentioned the derby up until then).
So, I'm going to try and talk my neighbor into getting his camper out
there, otherwise I'll find a place to stay.

239.7 | Tents on the ice??? Buuurrrrrrr,.. | ESKIMO::RINELLA | | Thu Dec 10 1992 12:58 | 16 |

While we were fishing last year at the derby, there were a few brave
souls that pitched a tent and spent the night out on the ice!!!!
Burrrrrrrrrr thats a little too cold for me! There were quite a few
campers out on the ice, hell there was one spot that had about ten
vehicles lined up with one being a camper. I had my truck on about 12
inches of ice and I was still a little nervous, first time with my truck
out on the ice:'). All in all it was a great time, even though it was
windy as all hell on sunday, and I'm looking forward to doing it again
this year..

Hi Don,
Its been a while since ive checked out this notes file, but is tis the
season for Smelt fishing and Ice fishing!!! In regards to your camper
idea - It sounds good, but you may want to locate near shore. I watch a
guy last year (and I believe it was Sunday) that the wind blew his
Colman camper arcoss the ice and he could not catch it...
Have Fun,
Oh, one more thing - Last week just before the snow storm there was ICE
covering the entire Exeter River:) I have been up there since, must be
almost melted by now.
