232.0. "1992/1993 Ice Fishing ....." by DVLP23::WHITTEMORE (Carp Perdiem) Tue Nov 10 1992 12:48

I know it's a bit early yet but just the same here's the topic for all
our 1992/1993 ICE FISHING lies - er - STORIES!

I'll start off by posting (again) the APA ice thickness / load capacity
chart (.1) and a wind-chill factor chart (.2)

The following is a reproduction of the 'American Pulp Wood Association's
Table for Measuring Relative Safety of Ice'

It referes to 'the hard blue ice that forms on lakes and ponds'.

'The strength of ice is reduced by at lease 15% for clead blue ice over
running water such as a river.'

'Slushy ice has less than half the strength of blue ice.'

Aaaaaarrrrrghhhh!!!!

It looks like this Saturday will be my last day out for the season...rain or
shine, wind or sn*w. Then, I'll reluctantly (and to my wife's pleasure)
winterize it and stow it away.

It's the most depressing day of the year!

-HSJ- (who glanced quickly at the power auger in the corner, but just once!)

232.6You just have to dress for it.CHTP00::CHTP03::PAULSONWork is for people who don't FISH!Fri Nov 13 1992 16:0616
I kinda hated the thought of taking up ice-fishing when I first was
asked about 5 years ago. Since then I have become hooked (so to
speak). In fact, the best day I ever had fishing in Wisconsin, open or
stiff water, was through the ice. I caught five bass in three hours
that were 4 pounds to 6 pounds. Several other smaller ones too. I
thought I had gone to TIP-UP heaven. It can be great on a warm sunny
day. But I have had my share of very cold and windy days as well. As I am
sitting out there freezing, that's when I wonder if I am a few minnows
short of a full bait bucket. Then I hear music to my ears, FLAG!!!!!

By the way, ice-fishing still gets you out of the house to avoid all
the work your wife has for you. There are always good articles in
the IN-Fisherman magazine about ice-fishing that may wet your appetite.
Don't waste a good power auger for another year.

It figures, I go and buy a nice new power auger last winter and then
promptly relocate to Seattle, Wa., I'm told I'll have to drive several
hours to find ice fishing out here.

I'll miss being at the derby this year, all you guys will miss is an
extra 10 bucks!

I saw a 5 1/2 pound Rainbow trout last night. A fantastic

fish it was. The guy caught it at Newfound Lake yesterday ice

year ( an article on the Salmons was published in the Sunday

far northern end. The middle is open water.

For those of us in Colorado: 11-Mile and Antero have about 1 foot
of ice. I caught 3 rainbows at about 2 pounds each at Antero
last week. Some friends report some good salmon action at 11-Mile.
I'll try off Halbert Point this weekend.
232.13Norwich Lake (Huntington MA)DVLP00::WHITTEMORECarp PerdiemThu Dec 31 1992 10:5220
Went out on Norwich Lake the other day (Monday); There's approx. 8 inches
of ice off the old rec. hall and the whole pond's iced over. I started to set
up around 7:00 and before I got my fourth tip-up in I'd had two flags - one
hit and run (and spit-it-out) and one average sized perch. A few flags later
and one of the "large" shiners got hit followed by a good run. I set into
a pickerel that turned out to be 18+ inches and approx. 1 lb (deliar). A few
more flags (three perch and three pickerel - all released) and then things
went dead around 10:00 / 10:30. I'll be back up there bright and early New
Years day 1993!

Went to Wisconsin this past weekend to get my ice fishing season
underway. Had plenty of ice (7-8 inches) and even caught a couple nice
bass, 3 pounds and 4 pounds. I let them go to be caught another day. I
better quit while I am ahead of the game.

It's nice to go home and not have to eat the left-over bait again.
Save the saltines for next time.

Don't know about Newfound, but was out ice fishing yesterday on Stumpfield
and was chatting with a guy who said ice on Winnie is scarce. Meridith Bay,
HQ site for the Winnie Derby in a few weeks, is still WIDE OPEN! Only the
smaller, protected coves have any ice and it's still not too safe.

Unless we get a real quick deep freeze in the next couple of weeks, there's
gonna be lots of folks crowding what little safe ice there is! Should be
interesting.

George, since your in a private club the rules are most likley a bit
different with bylaws etc, you should probably read your hand book
or ask a few question at your club meeting, A buddy of mine's in a
club, and if you catch a trout your cannot release it, you have to take
it with you, (well for there ice fishing derby's anyway, with a limit
of 3 fish.)

In southern Worcester county, anyone know how thick the ice is?

Gunna hit ole 'Chargogg tomorrow morning.
First time out in either 3 or 4 years.
And ole "mother-in-law" nature seems to have grown tired
of being a real b____, and is allowing us to have a 35 to 40
degree day. Just right for a novice from the U.K. to break
into this stuff. Now I hope the residents below the hard
water co-operate. :^)

Saturday we drilled thru approx 2' out in Smiths cove.

Finished setting up about 8, had 1 bite about 10, left
at 2. Getting off the ice a person from the Mass. Div.
of Fisheries'n Wildlife asked if we'd answer some questions.
Related to time of arrival, what we were fishing for, how
many tilts, type of bait, and what we caught. He laffed
and said "no one else is doing any better today."

Going out again on wednesday. Not sure yet just where.

Well, I had a great day Saturday. I didn't have much planned
for the day so I was puttering around the house until my Bro-in-law
called about 12:30pm and felt like fishing. It was warm out so we
decided to tale Cam, my 2 1/2 yr old Son. The gears went south in my
auger so we were hoping there were people there that morning and left
saving us some work. Bingo. 12 holes not even frozen over. We set up
by 2:00 and the first flag went up at 2:15. Bang! 5.25lb bass. 5 min
later, Bang! 3lb bass. over the course of the afternoon, we iced and
released those 2 plus 2 more 3lbers, 6-7 +-2lbs, and about 5-6 shorts.
The best day of the year. Not bad for sleeping in...
