210.0. "TV Fishing Shows" by MONTOR::HANNAN (Beyond description...) Fri Aug 07 1992 11:47

I thought this conference had a note on TV fishing shows,
couldn't find one, so here it is.

210.1Sportfishing the NortheastMONTOR::HANNANBeyond description...Fri Aug 07 1992 11:5320
There's a new fishing show on Channel 25 Boston called
"Sportfishing the Northeast". It's on sunday nights at 11 p.m.

I've seen 2 shows so far, and they were both excellent for
content. Like a home movie, but with real people. No glitzy
"tv stars" wearing a million advertisement patches, no product
endorsements, no crappie fishing in south whatever, none of that
sort of thing. Looks like it's mostly if not all salt water fishing
	around new england.

The first show I saw was Striper fishing on the North River somewhere
in Mass. The reaction of the host when he pulled in the keeper was
priceless. The second show I saw was tuna fishing on a party boat
where the host set an IFGA record with a 65 lb or so tuna on 40 lb
gear. Looked like one helluva fight! He also caught a goreous
dolphin. They were fishing out of Niantic CT.

	Highly recommended!

Awwwwww......I sorta like Jimmy Houston and Bill Dance........

I get really jealous though, when I see those two dudes...sort of
over-the-hill like me, a bit of a beer-gut, but living the life that
almost any person who likes to fish would give up their kneecaps for!!
Just imagine yourself..."Darn....gotta get up tommorrow and go FISHIN
again!! This sure is a tough job I got here" They don't have to buy
clothes, tackle, boats, motors...even the Jeep, Scout or Pickup that
they pull the boat trailer around with is given to them by the
    manufacturers!!

And when they do get on the water, Bill Dance seems to have a dozen
or so 8-10 pound bass corralled somewhere...or 30 pound catfish...makes
ya drool just seeing them haul 20 or 30 beautiful fish in in a
    half-hour show...

Although some shows have segments that are close to real time, many
1/2 hour shows take days to film - and some, bill dance in particular,
are incredibly setup - it's exceptionally rare to actually see bill
dance catch a fish in real time. He's the worst "setup" offender on
the tube... pay attention to the camera angles...

Yes but, they also go to places where you TOO could do no wrong.

I would like to see them have non-stop action in some local ponds
in this area...I don't think so.

210.6I SAW THAT, GOOD SHOW!!!PIPPER::STURNERSat Aug 08 1992 05:1711
    Sportfishing the Northeast.
I saw that Ken, I missed the first show. Sounds like it was a good
one. I enjoyed the second show. I liked it when the guy got the first
fish. He sounded like me when He was bringing it in
" Oh it's a big one. Na it's small. Wow, what a fight, it must be big.
No, it's a small one." But that was a nice tuna He got at the end.
Going to try to watch it this weekend or at least tape it.
I'd like them to fish Capecod Bay. Ken, Where were they when fishing
for Strippers on the first show?

                                                  Scott.

I work second shift and don't have much time to watch TV. Could
someone please post some of the times that these shows are scheduled so
    I can tape them.

I think the crew were up in Hampton fishing on the Starfish. It
took them two days to complete the shoot. The camera crew got very
seasick the first day. I saw the closing monologue for the show,
    funny ending.

That's *exactly* the way I've been describing it to friends.
Sounds just like I'd be [theoretically :-/] with a monster striper
	on there!

I missed the opening of that show, but he said he was fishing
the North River in MA I believe. Trouble is, there are multiple
North Rivers in MA, so I don't know where exactly.

Last night's show was on at 11:30 pm, channel 25 Boston. I thought
I missed it after watching the 11 news, but lucked out.

      Ref. Houston & Dance..

Every now and then they do a "bloopers" show on these two guys...like
they run the stuff that they didn't dare to show on the "real" shows...
Never laughed so hard in my life watching old Bill fall outa the boat 3
or 4 times, screw-up a "foolproof" boat trailer hitch about 10 times,
catch a 6 ounce bass and break a $45.00 rod in about 4 pieces doing it,
fall outa the boat a few more times, put one food on the dock, the
other on the boat and watch the boat slowly drift away from the
dock, stick his lure in the back of his shirt, stick his lure in the
back of his fishing partner......and a few others.

Yeah, I'm sure they DO set up a lot of the stuff that goes into these
shows, but he still catches a lot of fish and these guys and a few
others sure as hell have some GREAT jobs!! I'd sure as the dickens
rather be sitting in a $50,000 Ranger inboard-outboard on some big TVA
reservoir handling a half-dozen nice rods 'n reels and getting paid for
it than sitting here plinking away at a keyboard....

210.11Is Mark Sosin's Salt Water Journal still on the air?KOKO::GREENBERGMon Aug 10 1992 14:0610
Does anyone know if Mark Sosin's Saltwater Journal is
still on the air. I think ESPN used to carry it, but I
haven't been able to find it lately.

This was/is a good show. Emphasized sporting aspects,
good tips and was intelligently narrated.

I'd appreciate finding out if it's still on.

I think that was New England Rod and Reel Jim. They were at the

heart at this guys feet. the heart continued

Mark Sosin is not on in the summer...look for him again in the fall.

Mike Alperin was fishing the North River in Marshfield/Pembroke area, near
the "cliffs", which one I don't know.

Those of you in the New England area that have enjoyed Outdoor
Digest from channel 11 will no longer be able to see it. They
are substituding a new show called Cabin Country.

I called the station and they said they did not like Fred Troast
making his political views known during the show. This just added
color to his show and made it more interesting in my point of view.

If you have enjoyed Outdoor Digest and ever wish to see it again,
please write to Channel 11 in Durram, New Hampshire or call and
ask for the programing department at 603-868-1100.

I contributed for the first time to a PBS station last year to keep
Outdoor Digest on the air. It may be my last.
