| I'd love to hear how you made out fishing in central Florida.
We've been bass fishing in Florida on our winter vacations for 4 years
now. Last year we were in the Orange Spring area (real red-neck
country) We fished the Rodman Pool, (St. Johns River) paid a guide
$$$$ and caught 2 tiny bass. Then one day we decided to take a ride
and find some lakes near my mom. She's in Spring Hill, we ended up at
a STate Park, rented a canoe and not only saw some great wildlife but
my husband caught 2 good size bass.
The more we read about the fishing in Florida, the more depressing it
gets, so me of the big lakes are dying and they don't know where the
damage is coming from....
WE've also fished Lake Okichobee a couple of time....had a great time
there.
We have now decided that we won't use guides anymore and go it alone!!!
Love to hear how you did and where you went.

Well over a year has passed since the base note
and I still haven't been there! Actually I am
going there next week so I'm wondering if anyone
knows the prices on a short term Florida fishing
license,(around 3 days).
This would be for bass fishing.
Thanks...chet

194.3 | Can you say "live bait"? | RANGER::MACINTYRE | Terminal Angler | Wed Dec 15 1993 12:47 | 19 |
| Stopped fishing Florida a few years ago, but don't recall the short
term licenses being too outrageous. Doubt it'd be much more than $20
for 3 days, assuming they have a 3 day.
If your lucky your inlaws fish and can take you off the beaten track. In
many of the more popular spots it's tough for a bass to swim around
without bumping into a shiner on a hook.
Florida suffers from too much hawg hunting with shiners and from too
much catch and eat.
But, there's a ton of water to fish and I'm sure there's still plenty
of bass there, but my guess is that some of the smaller unknown spots
might offer better fishing these days than the Toho's, Kissimmee,
Okechobee, St. Johns, etc..
Have fun,
-donmac

Just as an update,(not that anyone will be fishing
in Dunnellon Fl. anytime soon).
Anglers Resort
Dunnellon Fl.
904.489.2397
These people have a hotel and rent 14' fishing boats
w/6 hp engines for $38 for a full day. The boats seat
four adults.
They also sell licenses...7 day= $16.50
They sell all bait where you get the boat. They say
that in the past few days the have been boating bass
in the 5-9 lb range,(we'll see :-) This is fishing
in a river that runs through Dunnellon.
I love these people they are even open on Christmas!!!
chet,(gone fishing)

I had originally intended to just rent a small boat
and try to master that Florida bass fishing myself
until I saw the sign offering guide services. As my
wife is an incredibly kind woman I get the o.k. to
have a great day of fishing!
This is a summary of my "day in the sun" on 12/28/93.
Where- North central Florida near Dunnellon,(population 1,600)
Crystal River
This is a river area that apparently is close to the ocean
as it features high/low tides and supports both fresh water
and salt water fish.
Conditions- Sunny 75 degrees & incredibly clear water.
Expense- Guide & boat usage... 175
3 dozen shiners...... 26
7 day license........ 16
----
Total................ 217
Summary-
Meet the guide at 7 A.M.
Drool over his boat... a brand new 18' Pro-craft fiberglass
bass boat w/ 150 horsies pushing it. Drool over color coordinated
truck that pulls the boat.
Drive 15 minutes to a ramp for the Crystal River. The Crystal River
area we fished was really two completely different types of areas.
First we fished in an area that had a lot of spring filled channels
that were heavily populated in terms of housing. The second area
was what he referred to as "the bay" which seemed to be just that.
There was a lot of boat traffic in this area...primarily fishing
and pontoon boats.
Method- Trolling shiners from bait casters.
Service
Provided- Everything! This guy dedicates himself to making sure you have
the best fishing experience possible. He does the baiting of the
hook, casts- then hands you the pole! He also keeps a line in the
water and if he sees a bass going for it he hands you the pole for
the hook set. As soon as a fish is landed he hands you another pole
so you always have a line in the water.
Fish
Caught- 7 Bass...all keepers,(14"min in Fla)
Smallest= 15" 2+ pounds
Largest= 2@ 3 1/2 pounds,(no length taken).
Beautiful fish with a ton of fight!
2 Jack Krevels,(sp?)
Smallest= approx 2 pounds
largest= approx 5 pounds
a salt water fish with impressive teeth :-(
pound for pound probably the hardest fish I've ever landed
Over all- It was a really great fishing experience. The water was so clear
that I could easily see the fish even in deeper waters. I actually
blew a hook set once because of this when I saw about 6 big bass
chasing down my shiner. I was in such awe that I forgot to get the
slack out of the line and missed the hit. It was incredible to see
the Manatees,(sp?), swimming along side the boat. Glad they don't
eat shiners :-)
