Does anybody have any information on what type of fishing one could expect in the Saco River (I think it's in North Conway,N.H.? Someone else set up this trip)? Or is there any fish? What type of fish might I expect? (Bass,Trout,Catfish) Any suggestions on what baits to use? Also, how is it for canoes, or a small 3 hp boat? Is it a shallow river? Lots of current? Planning on going there during the end of July with 4 other couples and I would like to start planning on what to bring. Thanks for any information you can provide. George

I have seen mostly people fishing for trout and have seen some trout. The river is fairly shallow and you may have to drag your canoe over shallows. Speed of river is dependent on how recent the rain has come and how much. I had a map several years ago of the river that I bought in North Conway that showed brookies, brown trout and rainbows in various parts of the river. We used to canoe it several years ago and there were always people fly-fishing, Never saw anyone fishing with bait or other gear. Good Luck

Four years ago I camped at the Saco River Family Campground for Memorial Day. Me and a friend caught 3 rainbows just upstream from the campground. We didn't fish all that long. We were using Rooster Tails. George

I'll be launching out of Biddeford this weekend in search of stripers. I don't know much about the area but hope to stumble into a few. Will venture out the mouth to "fortunes rocks" also. Expect to see some schoolies in the area "somewhere" but it'll be a shot in the dark...just going out for a quick fix on my way up the coast. I know this reply doesn't have much to do with original question ...quite a bit down rivah' jon

Take some dries- light cahill, adams size 14-16 or so, and probably a couple of big white wulffs (size 10 or so). A few wets- leadwing coachman, royal coachman, hendrickson size 12-16 a few nymphs- gold ribbed hare's ear, pheasant tail nymph, prince nymph size 12-16, and a few stone nymphs, and perhaps hellgrammite imitation. You don't have to worry about packing everything; there's a decent fly shop up there. I think it's called North Country Angler or some such; it's right on rt 16. You could probably get a good idea or what you should try from them. Not a bad trade, for buying a few flies... the Doctah |
