| You can catch just about anything that swims with a jig. I usually put
one rod out with live bait(minnows) and jig with the other. Crappie
and walleye both are suckers for either. Try tipping the jig with a
minnow, they hold on longer.

| Well the season opened Saturday and although the lake I fish on was
closed (Oneida Lake NY), because of flooding, I still went out and fished
off shore. I caught a couple of small walleyes (13"-14") unfortunately I
could keep them (must be 15") and found males that they were still milking.
Does this mean they are still pre spawn or are these late comers (no
pun intended) or is this nomal after spawn. Also I did catch on yellow
perch and it had the same condition.
Thanks

| Lets see if I can get this right this time. I blew the last entry big
time.
I'm looking for walleye fisherpersons to swap lies with. We leave next
Thursday for northern Minnesota and CAN'T WAIT to hit the 'Eyes.
We mostly jig with leadheads tipped with minnows or drag leeches behind
spinners. Have caught some nice fish on crankbaits (Wally Divers, Shad
Raps) but not many.
Would like to here what your favorite presentations are. What time of
day you prefer. Any info to get me more pumped up is appreciated.

| I'm a avid Walleye angler in central NY. Most of my time is spent on
Onieda Lake (Walleye capital of the world). I went out Saturday for
the opener and caught a nice 20"er. This is a good size fish for
Onieda although I know it would be small for our great lakes friends.
Most of the time I jig with a lead head, rubber tail and tip it with
half a worm. A lot of time is spent playing with the colors. This
year I'm playing with a bottom bouncer on my second pole and pulling a
crank bait. No luck yet but only tried once.
It's great to talk to a fresh water fisher and a walleye man, I'm tired
of these salt dogs that know nothing about finesse fishing :>.

Whats the fight like for a walleye. Do they hit hard, jump, run deep?
I have never had the opprtunity to fish for walleye, but know they have
a pretty big following.

have fished successfully for Walleye in northern minnesota using
leeches on slip bobbers, minnows on trailer hook(treble or single
hooked thru the back fin) with drop sinker on three way swivel(this
is especially effective in current, and with a black rooster tail
spinner on a light spinning outfit retrieved very slowly on the bottom.
If your hitting Minnetonka(sp), you should find fish this time of year
within 200 yards of shore and perhaps out on the flats. Have fun,
good luck and keep the tip up.

| Brain,
I have never had a walleye jump on me, they just head down. They are
hard fighters tho, a good size fish will make several runs when you
get it close to the boat. They have a real fear of that landing net
too :-).
The best thing about walleye is the taste!! (We only keep enough for a
couple of meals)
Went shopping last night to stock up, just had to have a couple new
Daredevils in the box.
Never had much luck with that slip bobber thing. Probably never found
the right structure. Rooster tail spinners eh? Never considered that
one.
ONE WEEK TO GO!

| Walleye, at least the ones I've caught, are not big fighters or hard
hitters. It's hard to tell when they hit. They are not a predictable
fish you have to hunt them. They are one of the best eating fish for
sure.

| Jigs, Jigs, Jigs!
I love to fish them! There is just something about moving that jig
slowly along the bottom and feel that little tap. I have had good luck
for sauger/walleye with the shad jigs(clear with metal flake), as well
as the typical curly tail, with or without tipped bait.
As far as the fight goes, I use a light/med action lightning rod with
6-8lb test. Ususally 6 if I'm fishing where there aren't many pike.
Just as stated before they dive for the bottom.
I am moving to Ohio in less than 2 weeks and plan on hitting Erie next
spring. They catch some monsters there. Mainly on the Erie Dearies
and other weight forward spinners.
Good Luck

| Leaving tomorrow morning! Can't wait. Will be on the water Saturday
afternoon. Watched the weather channel last night, looks like I'll
be wet Saturday and Sunday. That's OK, I've waited all year for this,
a little rain ain't gonna stop me.
I'll write a report when I get back.
Tight lines,

| I just got back from Canada (Ontario - just outside of Dryden) and we
mostly fished for walleye. The prefered method was to use a "Lindy rig"
(hook with a spinner, about two feet of line to a swivel which holds a
slip sinker) tipped with a minnow. The prefered spinner colors were
flouresent green, silver and gold. It was very effective.
The last two days of the trip we went to secluded lakes. The first
secluded lake we caught 18 total most in the 15-17 inch range (2-3lbs)
with 4 over 20 inches.
The second secluded lake we fished was a fly in lake. It was the first
time I have done a fly in and it was great. We caught 30 walleyes in
2 1/2 hours! They were in the 13-15 inch range with a 1/2 dozen under
12 inches. The lake was full of hungry walleyes. We started fishing for
Northern at 10:30 in the morning and we still caught more walleyes.
That day I caught walleyes on lindy rigs, Jonhson silver minnows,
and rappalas. I even caught them in shallow weedy bays.
As far as how they hit, I will go along with the noter who says it is
is finesse fishing. Walleyes tend to gulp there food, so when they hit
it almost feels like a snag. The key is when you get the hit (which
feels like a series of taps) to give them some line (allow them to
fully engulf the bait) and then set the hook.
The ones I have caught always seem to put up a good fight, but they are
not jumpers.
Finding them is the hard part, but in general they tend to live off
rocky points, but as water temp. changes they move.
They are great eating, especially after a hard :-) day of fishin'.

| Greg,
Sounds like you had a great trip.
I have been back from my Minnesota trip a week now. Can't beleive how
fast time flies.
We didn't do as well this year as we have done in the past. It was HOT
and sunny all but one day. Anybody who fishes Walleyes can appreciate
what hot sunny days do to the fish. Luckily it was the week of the full
moon, so we spent alot of time night fishing. Had very good results
with #13 jointed Raps trolled long lined behind the boat. The fish we
took this way were all quality (big) but we had to work for them.
Spent alot of the daylight hours in the weedy bays casting for Pike.
What a blast this is. I will never get tired of catching Pike. Used
everything from spoons, rattletraps and big plugs, they seemed to eat
anything.
Overall we always have a good trip. Everybody gets along great. The
beer is always cold, and the Walleye always tastes great.
Looking forward to next year.

| Greg, John,
Stop it!!
You guys are killing me. It really sounds like you-all had a great
time. I have been wanting to go up there forever and next year I'm
going no matter what.
A buddy of mine goes to the boundary waters everyyear and goes about 40
miles back in. They got back a week or so ago and caught some pretty
nice fish too. They caught a few pike over 40"!!! He said they caught
more walleyes this year than they have in a long time, although most
were under 3lbs....Can you say shorelunch!
He said you need to eat quite a bit because the black flies take their
share.
Good Luck

| Leaving tomorrow for our 10th annual trip to Cass Lake in northern
Minnesota. Needless to say I am a little excited. Have not been fishing
at all yet this year. Can't wait to feel that first tap. Can't wait to
taste that first walleye!
Will be jigging soon.

I was just reading a Field and Stream article
about walleye fishing on the Saginaw river in
Michigan and it looks like great walleye fishing.
Anyone in here ever have the chance to fish there
and is as good as this article says? They claim
that the average walleye is around 4-5 lbs, and it
is nothing to bring in 12-15 lbers. This was a ice-
fishing article.
