Didn't know you needed a license to SALT_H20 fish in general?
Exception I know here in Northeast is for Tuna.
What's the "rest of the story" from CA?

Didn't you know, salt water licenses are the latest rage. Florida has one,
and California has one, don't know about the rest of the civilized world. It's
called rip-off the tourist, but it spills over to the residents as well. Come
to the sun and the sea and the fun. Want to fish??? PAY, PAY, PAY. In fact
in Florida they are separate licenses so you have th pleasure of paying twice.
Ain't we having fun???
Massachusetts will have one eventually, California and Florida are just
trend setters. The greedy politicians will find out that people are able (if
not exactly willing) to PAY to fish anywhere there are fish... Heck in some
states people PAY to fish for stocked catfish in a farm pond. I have a brother
who catches catfish out of the Rappohannock River in Va. and sells 1000 lbs
a week to some guy with a tank truck who takes them to So. Carolina (I think)
where he sells them to the "U-fish" operators. Those people pay $10/hr for
up to 10 lbs of fish and then pay by the pound for anything over the 10 lbs.
Enjoy the freebee's while you can..

Its disgusting, all for the general fund, just like the
User Fee for boats, or is it abuser fee. I can see fresh
water licenses to a point, (although i don't fish it)
they do stock, and maintain etc. so those revenues do some
good. Stock the ocean for who, the draggers. I used to fish
for fluke (summer flounder, flounder with teeth) i took enough
for a meal, not being greedy. I havn't been able to find any
in the last 2 years, the commercial boats follow them to the
breeding grounds and hammer them there.
Are we gonna hear, the fees will be used for restoration,
Sure for abouse....

| A California fishing license is valid for all waters in the state both
fresh and salt. It costs $23.65 (the most expensive in the nation).
Hopefully some of the money goes to catching people fishing without a
license and keeping under sized fish.

Hey Rich,
I bought a license
Question:
-High tide/low tide?
-Incomming/outgoing?
Last evening, I saw a guy pull in about a three lb. Corbina. I thought
it was a bone fish from what I remember from watchin Mark Sosin fly for
them in in Fla.
This guy has a 10 foot rod and very large spincaster using FOUR (4lb.
pound test. He could cast a small crab with somme split shot about 50
yards (it seemed that far).
btw, these surfcastin types have the UGLIEST most coroded gear I have
ever seen. can I assume that washing with fresh water will save my
gear?

This doesn't exactly tell you how to prevent getting the scuz to begin
with, which was your question I believe, but after you've been caught neglecting
your tackle this will help clean it up.
About 20 years ago I had the privilege of scuba diving with some UDT
guys off an LST (USS Boulder I think). Anyway we were using some club
equipment that had an unsightly amout of the green scuz (corrosion) that poorly
maintained saltwater equipment grows. These UDT guys about had a 'cow' when
they saw the corrosion and proceeded to show us how to clean it (UDT guys are
just like Marines, "they'd rather spit polish shoes than f#@k").
Take the gear apart and boil it in vinegar. They said that on the ship
they used a stronger solution than standard vinegar, but the principle was the
same it just took a little longer.

179.10 | Muriatic acid works well, too | GEMVAX::JOHNHC | | Thu May 21 1992 13:26 | 22 |
| Or you can use muriatic acid mixed with freshwater in a 1:10 ratio.
Drop the corroded parts in and watch the bubbles pop to the surface.
When the bubbling has stopped, pull the parts out with tweezers or
pliars and drop them into another container of water saturated with
baking soda. Swish the parts around in the baking soda and, once you're
sure the acid has been neutralized, drop the parts into pure
freshwater. Swish them around in the freshwater until you're sure
you've gotten all the soda off them, then pull them out to dry in the
air.
You might feel more comfortable wearing forearm-protective rubber
gloves and eye shields. If so, please wear them.
This is the way scuba shops clean corroded gear. (Remove all rubber
parts, such as o-rings, before submerging the corroded part in the acid
wash.) It's fast, safe (if done right), and it leaves the gear looking
as clean or cleaner than it did brand new.

BDW, to answer the question about rinsing with fresh water. It
works for me. I dont use my salt stuff too often, but my 4 year old
cod stick and reel still look good. I rince it off when I get home.
Not the day after. No matter how cocked you get just make sure you
rince off the gear. I'm sure that will give you further life.
As for casting, you dont have to cast the furthest to catch the fish.
bass stay close to the shore too.

Very true. I rinse all my gear after every trip, same day,
no matter how tired I am. Same with cleaning and freezing
the filets.
One thing that's recommended is not to use water with a lot of
force because it supposedly drives the salt into the internals
of the reel. Just a very light spray or flow will do.
Then I finish it off with a light spray of WD40.
