165.0. "Novice surf casting on the Cape" by DATABS::LAVASH (Same as it ever was...) Wed Apr 29 1992 10:30

I just got a surf casting setup from my wife for my birthday.

I've done some bottom fishing from jetty's as a kid but usually with
my freshwater rigs.

I'll be staying at Nickerson State Park on the Cape for a real long
Memorial Day weekend.

Any tips on places to go, or lure selection, or bait selection? In
the past I either used squid or seaworms and caught flounder, pogies
and sea robins. I'd rather avoid the pogie/sea robins...

I'm pretty sure Memorial Day is too early for Blues even on the outer cape,
I really don't care what I catch as long as I'm catching something.

What should I expect to catch/go after?

Sorry for the complete novice question, but all I could find on surf casting
was specific to catching cod at the mouth of the Merrimack.

    SURFCASTING AT NIGHT ALONG THE BEACH AT BREWSTER FOR SCHOOLIES MAY BE
    PRODUCTIVE. LOTS OF BEACH TO WORK. 1.5 HOURS BEFORE HIGH TIDE TILL THE
    SAME AFTER. LOW TIDE BRINGD ABOUT A MILE OF FLATS TOWAD THE TARGET
    SHIP. EELS OR WORMS WILL ALSO WORK.

I agree with .1--The stripers (schoolies at least) should be there now, (or
soon, the water is unseasonably cold, but I've heard reports they are in the
Buzzards Bay area) so Memorial day should be good. Squid is another good bait
for stripers, although the schoolies should hit well on poppers and kastmasters
for now.

165.3squid teaser on a kastmaster?DATABS::LAVASHSame as it ever was...Wed Apr 29 1992 17:1014
    Okay,

    So for tackle I pick up some poppers and some kastmasters, and
    if I'm going to use bait, squid or sea worms should be okay.

    Saw in a previous note how to cut up squid teasers, can/should these
    be added to the kastmasters or is that overkill?

    Nickerson is real close to Webster Beach so that is probably where
    I'll head first. The local bait shop may be of help too.

    Thanks,

    George

I wouldn't bother with the teaser, especially if the hook has bucktail on it.

165.5cheap(er) suggestionUSCTR1::HPLUMLEYWed Apr 29 1992 18:1118
    re metal lures - just a suggestion:

    Goose Hummock and Cape Cod reel and probably most of the other shops as
    well now stock replicas of the old tin squids.

    I mention these because they're cheap(er) than brand name metal,
    they seem to work just as well, and you dont feel quite so bad when
    your knot/leader combo gives way.

    You may be far better at tieing leaders and cinching knots than I was
    when first starting, but I can remember being *very* discouraged seeing
    $4 to 6.00 go flying into the suds.

    your mileage may vary.

165.6My vote goes to the eels....SUBPAC::CRONINThu Apr 30 1992 09:368
    	The Brewster Flats are indeed a great place close to Nickerson to
    fish for Stripers. Most of the Bass caught there come at night and
    most all of them are caught on eels. Sunken Meadow Beach, also on the
    Bay side, in Wellfleet is another popular place.
    	Don't make the usual novice surfcaster mistake of thinking that all
    the fish are a max cast from shore, a lot of Bass are caught in real
    close.

165.7leader strength and lengthDATABS::LAVASHSame as it ever was...Thu Apr 30 1992 10:1214
    Thanks for all the info so far. Last night I went through the
    old FISHING notes file and found a bunch of info. I've got a
    question on leaders. There was a mention of s shock leader, it sounded
    like it was at least the lenght of the rod. It's used to take up
    the initial shock of casting.

    I've got a 10 ft m/h rod, I was thinking of going with 15lb test and
    then a leader of 30-50lb test.

    How long should this leader be? Should I go with the 50 or the 30?

    Thanks again,

    George
165.8Shock leader aren't necessary...SUBPAC::CRONINThu Apr 30 1992 11:588
    	Personal opinion here: For Stripers I'd just use a short leader
    if any. Just check your line often where it's in the tip top when you're
    casting to be sure you're not fraying it from too much use.

    	15 - 17 lb. line is fine, just be sure your drag is set properly.
    one of the recent (a few years back) 70+ lb. Stripers was caught from
    Nauset Beach on 17 lb. line.

165.9Cannal tipsSALEM::ALLEN_JUmmmm,better get a bigger boat!Thu Apr 30 1992 17:258
    RE:1

    	Try the Cape Cod Cannal during eb tide (when current stops...)
    using live sand eels.... I've had good luck at night verses day.
    It should'nt be too early to pull some in now, I think it's their
    spawning time from now until early to mid June.

    George, eels at night are certainly your best bet for some bigger bass.
    For schoolies I've had great luck with any kind of white jig during the
    day or jointed rebels.

    If blues are in the area, I suggest a 3' section of 60 lb mono for
    a leader.

    Remind me a few days before you leave I and will bring in the latest
    fishing reports from the fisherman. That should at least give you an
    idea of what fish are in the area.

    Mark,
