| I don't have a hydrafoil but my Fish-On trolling plate acts just like
one, when it's in the up position. My motor is an 88hp, I also had one
on a 25 Merc.
It *WILL* make your boat jump up on plane in half the time and it
*WILL* eliminate porpoising/bow hop. I would strongly recommend(sp)
one for any motor.

159.2 | Still have a few concerns | DPDMAI::BOWMAN | LARRY BOWMAN | Wed Apr 22 1992 12:12 | 28 |
| Thanks for the info. Jeff, but I still have some concerns:
1) I have a small 12 foot flat-bottom Jon boat w/ a 8hp Johnson (1 yr. old
engine). In a attempt to reach bass in isolated areas, particularly in
the Spring, I often navigate through a foot of water in circumstances
involving standing timber. In this type of a situation, when I have
my engine set on shallow water drive, will it make the stern of the
boat dig down and produce poorer bottom clearance?
2) Will I be able to lift the bow of the boat in a situation involving
strong winds on open water and still get back to shore? Wind speeds
average 15-25 mph in Texas and conditions can change rapidly to
hazardous straight-line winds- wind speeds in well in excess of 25 mph
- a gut wrenching situation in a boat of this size or any other
freshwater boat for that mater.
3) Damage to lower unit from underwater objects. Once again, a typical
situation in Texas- standing timber, fence post, barbed wire- many of
the man made lakes around here are not cleared- the land is simply
flooded.
4) Drilling four holes in my lower unit to accomadate the hydrofoil-
What if I don't like it?
Just trying to weigh the pro's and con's before purchase...

| Larry,
I don't think you would gain much benefits on your 8 hp.
On the other hand, it wouldn't hurt either. Have you considered
an "air boat"! Just kiddin.......

| An air boat?...Now there's an idea. Seriously, this is my first boat
and certainly won't be my last- hope to move up to a larger boat later-
if my wife and I can agree on the type of boat- When we go to a boat
show or dealer, the first feature she looks for is a cup holder and boat
capable of holding a boat load of Cuban refugees. Somehow this is not
the vessel I visualize.
Anyway, I have found this boat to be highly versitile and suits my
needs at this time. The boat is surprisingly fast given the eight
ponies under the cover. Thought I might pick up a few more m.p.h.
using the hydrofoil. Seen them advertised a lot, but haven't seen them
on any boats locally.

159.5 | Foils Lift & Work! | UNYEM::FRASCH | | Wed Apr 22 1992 17:26 | 11 |
| Larry,
The stern won't dig down! The foil actually lifts the stern up, which
should help with the stumps. I have a 19' I/O that comes up "level"
rather than nose up using a foil.
If you move from one boat to another, you can take it off and remount
it on your next one. Put a couple of plugs/caps in the old holes, and
who cares!
Good luck,
Don

159.6 | Take the FREEBIE | MADCAP::ORLOWSKI | | Thu Apr 23 1992 12:58 | 10 |
| I have a similar situation (Bow Hop) and I came within seconds of
buying a Hydro-foil for my 40HP. I called the dealer (Green's Marine in
Hooksett) and they are going to put Trim Tabs on the boat for FREE.
They claim the boat is causing the problem (FM161).
They did claim the problem could also be corrected by using a
Hydro-Foil on the engine,,,but I'll take the FREEBIE for now..

Foils do lift,,,but so should Power Trim

| I put one of these on the boat I used to have (had to sell a couple or
threee years ago -- the wonders and pleasures of divorce). I used it
instead of power trim, which was much more expensive, but reportedly works
better (you can regulate how much lift you get for differing conditions).
The stabilizer worked well; my boat would plane much more quickly.

This hydrofoil is going to slow you down a bit. I just bought
the Attwood Gullwing and I am very happy with it. It sits on a 90
hp Evinrude which is on the back of a 15' bass boat. I plane out
so fast now that it's much safer. Before I would go to full throttle
and lose sight of what's in front of me. Now the Attwood gets me on
plane in a fraction of the time and I don't lose sight of what's in
front of me. I have lost 5 mph with the Attwood.

| re .12:
Hmmmm....Do you have power tilt and trim. I can usually trim my boat
up and pick up about 3-4 mph. When I get it right on plan I think I'm
drafting about 5" of water.

159.14 | Added performance to my 70HP | SALEM::MAZEROLLE | | Mon May 11 1992 14:20 | 6 |
| Hi, I added some "wings" last year and found it added 3-4 MPH as well.
I also agree with the statement/s on getting onto plane much quicker as
well. I have the DOEL FINS, which I think work very well considering
the price.

159.15 | no thanks to hydra foils | ASABET::D_DAVOLL | | Fri May 22 1992 09:27 | 8 |

Just to shade some light on the other side of the spectrum, I bought
a hydra-foil and found it was dangerous on my Ranger. It seemed that it
would get up on plane better, but I had a problem in rought weather. I
used to be able to plane up on top of the waves, but with the hydra
foil it limited the amount of trim. Therefore I was going through more
waves than over them. Therefore no thanks for the hydra foil.

| What size ranger? I have one of those fins on mine. When I plane out the fin is
not even in the water. I have had people drive and I have looked over the
back deck. Once I am on plane it is out of the water!

159.17 | not me | ASABET::D_DAVOLL | | Fri May 22 1992 13:26 | 5 |
| My Ranger is a 372 with a 150 merc. I am told if the engine is
properly mounted the dehydral (sp) is suppose to be even with the
water. If your stabilizer is out of water than you engine is to high,
this is probably the reason you have not run into the trouble I have.

159.18 | Gimble Problems? | BOGUSS::NAJJAR | | Thu Nov 05 1992 16:57 | 6 |
| I've been seriously considering adding a hydro-foil to my 165 hp. Merc.
on a 19' Glastron trihull which I use on both fresh and salt water, but
have heard murmmerings of long term problems, such as wear and tear on
the gimbles. The Merc. is an I/O. Does anyone have any info on this?
