160.0. "Georgia fishing" by MAIL::BROOKSB (B.BROOKS AT BR-549) Mon Apr 20 1992 14:21

    Hi Georgians;

I work in the Wichita KS. DEC office and love to Bass fish. I
understand that Georgia has some of the best bass fishing in the
country. It just so happen that I plan on being in Atlanta for some
training and will have some free time on a weekend to try some fishing.
I would like to know where would be the best place to try. I will need
to rent a boat or hire a guide, unless someone would like to take a
Kansan out and prove how good the fishing really is. I'll be in
Georgia June 7th through the 20th.

    Brian,

I was in Atlanta last fall and the Katahoochie(spelling?) river is
right out of atlanta. I don't know about bass, but they have quite a
few trout, both browns and rainbows.

Lake Lanier is one of the premiere spotted bass lakes in the whole
southeast. Of course, the stripers are hitting, and also the bucket
    mouths.

I suggest that you fish lanier. As far as guides go, just about every
tackle store in the area here has got pamplets for guide services.

Personally, I wholeheartedly reccommend a guide by the name of Louis
Moore, phone number #404-962-7285. Every time I have fished with
Mr. Moore, he has put me on the fish. Louis provides everything you
need, and I mean everything. I think he fishes the lake about 4-6
days a week. He knows where they're at.

Give him a call, and tell him Bob Harris sent you. He gives referals
    preferential treatment.

by the way, .1 is supposed to be spelled Chattahoochee river. No big
deal. If you like trout fishing, you can tear them up on the "Hooch."
Just make sure they are not releasing water from the dam at Lake
lanier, Because if they are, get off the river.

Well, I had the itch big time to go trout fishing Saturday, and trout
season does not open in the mountains until end of March. So I went
with my wife to a part of the Chattahoochee river that has year round
    trout fishing.

We came upon two guys that had a stringer in the water with two
rainbows about 18 inches each. Nice fish. While we stood there
talking to them, one of them hooked up with a nice 6 pound brown.
He got it on shore and his line snapped. The fish went back in the
water. He should have had a net. We went about 50 yards downshore
and I caught a 15 inch brown on one pound line, in the river. Talking
about playing the fish. And the best thing is , these were not
    stockers. They were natives.

Well, after my wife got to cold, we jumped in the truck with the heater
on and drove to another place. I caught a real small fry, so I let it
go. Two guys were trolling upriver in a scanoe, and caught three trout
right in front of me. One of them was over three pounds. Again, they
didn't have a net. What is it with people and no nets. I would rather
have a net and not need it, than to need it and not have it.

In summary, I found some of the best trout fishing in Georgia this
weekend, and it's year round. Man, I can't wait to finish the boat I
am building, but that's another story.
