| In Massachusetts, they start stocking in April/May, when the roving
fisheries biologists determine that certain rivers are high enough to
sustain the fish for a week or two, by which time they expect them to
either be fished out or starved to death. The exact schedule seems to
depend on the route driven on any particular day ("windshield surveys"
are what they are actually called), the amount of rain that fell in the
previous week, the speed with which the surrounding land sheds water,
and a bunch of other variables that I probably ought not bring up.

| What species are still stocked in Mass? Do they stalk large and
smallmouth bass or only trout and salmon? They also used to stock
Tiger Muskies, do they still do that or has budget cuts stopped
reasonable stocking programs?

Read an article in the local newspaper that they recently stocked
Webster Lake with salmon. There's been pretty good fishin in this
ole lake in the recent past. My father-in-law lives on the lake
and knows most of the hot-spots. Just gettin ready to take the
kids on our first trip. Always alot of fun for them...for me,
un-tangling lines, adding bait, removin fish...geeeez, it's worse
than a day at work!

| Info I've received from C/O's in NH is they want to wait for the ideal
coditions before releasing any trout. This would insure a longer
survival rate for the fish & better fishing for the sportsmen. What
they cosider ideal: water temps around 45 degrees and the water (rivers
or streams) at a reasonable level. This means if we've had a lot of
snow & it melts fast or we get a lot of rain the rivers will be up to
high for stocking, the trout would never survive or they'd be washed
down stream, they'd wait until the middle or end of April. They usually
try to make several stockings per year, with most of them between the
begining of April and the end of May. Lakes and ponds are stocked in
the fall and then again a week before opening day (4th saturday in
April).
Hoped this helped. Next time you see a F&G C/O at your favorite spot,
take a few minutes to talk to him. They are a wealth of knowledge (they
have to be ) and they don't mind giving out what they know. Besides the
info you give him (how good the fishing is, how many you've caught
ect), the better the F&G dept can track their efforts.
thanks

Spring must be here. I got home today and on the front page
of the "Country Gazette" (a local Norfolk County paper). Was
a picture of the folks from Carroll's Bait shop releasing the
tagged trout into Lake Pearl (Wrenthem MA). This years cash
prizes are less $$$ but the fish are MUCH better. Here's a
few excerpts directly from the article.
"....... You can go fishing to hit the bucks - that's either
in Lake Pearl in Wrenthem or Lake Massapog in Sharon. Among
the 400 trout released in each lake earlier this week, 10 of
them are tagged - with the top prize being $250. It's part
of the Tag-in-Trout Fishing Derby which runs from now until
October 15."
"Four hundred rainbow trout (each weighing at least 4.5 lb)
were released into each of the lakes earlier this week ...."
".... Carroll's redeems the tags for prizes which include
either cash or gift certificates....."
"In addition to the trout, 80 Atlantic Salmon have also been
released into each lake. The Salmon are form a brooders stock
in Nashua, New Hampshire."
".. For more infomation .... call Carrolls... (508) 384-8322"
(Carrolls Bait and Tackle is on Route 1A in Norfolk)
The caption from the picture on the front page says the $250
trout in Lake Pearl weighs 10lbs! (no joke!). I assume a
similar beast has been put into Massapog (that's how Carroll
usually does it).
Finally, some fish around here worth the price of my license.
Good Fishin'
