142.0. "Opportunity to join a Moosehead trip in May" by HYEND::POPIENIUCK () Tue Mar 03 1992 08:23
A group of six guys (including myself) will be going to the
northernmost end of Moosehead Lake in Maine in May. One guy that was
going to go (and was bringing a boat) has had to cancel. We are
looking for a replacement WITH a boat and that can take one person on
that boat with him. We are trying to avoid having too many people
crammed into too few boats. Here are the details of the trip. If you
are interested in becoming part of this trip, please get in touch with
me via VAXmail (HYEND::POPIENIUCK). If there are multiple replies,
it's first come, etc.
Dates: Depart Maynard/Marlboro area Early AM (might even be in the wee
hours of Wed. AM) May 13. Depart for home Sunday, May 17. Middle
three days for fishing.
Where: Seeboomook Wilderness Campground at the northernmost end of
Moosehead Lake, Maine. We have cabin reserved that will sleep up to
eight. Campground has electricity, but cabin is propane only. Cabin
was new in 1991. Location is right on the shore of the lake. Boat
dock space within a few feet.
Who: Besides myself, it's a group of other DECcies and ex-DECcies
ranging in age from about 40 to almost 70. We go to fish, so you can
expect that we will be up before dawn. Almost everyone brings liquor
of some sort, but most of that is "back at camp"; we're not boozers.
Card games (pitch) are frequent in the evening. Our group varies a
little each year, but we've been going on these trips for the last 15
years or so. The last time we went to Moosehead was 8 or 9 years ago
to this same campground. It's had a major upgrade since then.
Fishing: Landlocked Salmon and Lake trout (togue). Most of the
planned fishing will be trolling in the lake. We might also bring a
canoe or two and if got a real windy day that kept us off the lake, we
might try some stream or river fishing.
Cost: License and liquor are your own. You share the cost of the
cabin and food expenses. Depending on how many people finally end up
going, this will be approximately $100 per person. People that bring
boats/cars receive a small refund/credit which has been $25 in past
years. This helps defray the expense of gas and tolls a bit. If you
commit to go, I will be asking you for a $50 deposit immediately, same
as everyone else. (This trip is run on a break even basis; no one
makes a profit.)
Other info: The cabin will hold up to 8 people. We have six going, so
we are looking for 1 or 2 people more, but with the stipulation that
you must be able to provide a vehicle and boat and be able to take one
person on your boat fishing with you. If you've never been to northern
Moosehead before, you're in for a great time. Last time we lost count
of moose and deer; food was great if not gourmet; timing is just after
iceout. Be sure your vehicle and boat trailer can take 35 miles of
dirt road driving, the roads are good though.
The big lakes in Maine can get a bit choppy, so make sure your boat is
big enough. Mine's a 16' deep V Sea Nymph and the other one presently
going is a 14' Deep V hull.
If you have questions I'll do my best to answer them. First person to
commit to go is in for a great trip! (Hell, a 5 day salmon and lake
trout fishing trip on Moosehead Lake for only ~$100. How can you go
wrong!!)
