| I'm sending my Shimano spinning reel off to Bucko's in Fall Rivah for an
overhaul. The overhaul is $9 (until March 1 when it becomes $10) and they charge
$4 for shipping (1 reel- additional reels $1 each.) Sounds like a good deal.
Turnaround right now is 1.5-2 weeks.

| Yes, it is plus parts. Do you expect that parts will add significantly
to the bill?
|
132.4 | can be | DONMAC::MACINTYRE | Terminal Angler | Wed Feb 19 1992 12:05 | 9 |
| Parts can be expensive. A washer or something is normally cheap, but
of gears, shafts, etc, are replaced, it can be surpizingly expensive.
I've never had to pay big bucks for parts through Bucko's, but the one
time I tried Metropolitan Rod and Reel (through Bass Pro Shops) it cost
over $20 (don't recall exactly how much) to repair a Shimano
baitcaster.

I just received a QD1310 back from Bucko's that was in for
a warranty repair of a broken hold down screw. It came back with
the bill for $4.00 in ship coast and no cost for parts. ( somehow
they thought it needed internal parts ?? ). This is how it looked
when I tried it out.
The screw was "glued on " and the internal gears were
reset so reeling in would only work when no load was applied.
The drag works but the gears slip.. Check all repairs completely
and woe be it to anyone who gets repair person # 7.
After calling them again , they offered to repair it again
if I send it back. Here goes nothing. good luck. ( I understand
they are the only authorized Quantum repair shop around. ) Back to
Penn I guess......
Maybe the Japanese aren't off that
much. eh ???

132.7 | Motorguide Tel. # ?? | TRACTR::TOMAS | I hate stiff water | Mon May 22 1995 10:20 | 18 |
| Anyone have the tel. # for Motorguide?
I picked up one of their PowerPack battery boxes that has their Dura-amp(?)
system on it to extend battery life. It's about 5 years old and works fine.
I recall discussions about these pulse systems causing problems with LCRs and
I want to speak with them about it. Since I only use one battery on my boat
to power the trolling motor, electronics, lights, etc, I want to make sure that
I don't damage my Eagle LCR.
I would also think that there are some type of RF chokes or filters that can
be installed on the power line of the LCR that would filter out the high
frequency pulses. Anyone heard of this?
Thanks,
Joe

This note string is pretty old. I have a couple of Shimano spinning reels
that I would like to send out for cleaning (got some sand in them). Is
anyone still using Bucko's in Fall River or the Tackle Connection in Windham?
Any other recommendations?

| Lon,
Good to see your still "Wheeling" around 8^) !!! I would not
recommend Buckos !!! The last few times I gave them reels to clean,
all they did was take off the side covers, removed the old grease, and
put new grease in. Nothing else was touched !!!! You'd think they
would try to make it look good and at least wipe the outside of the
reel down with WD-40 to make it look good.
I haven't tried them, but have heard BPS does a decent job. But
there turn-around is slow.

Thanks for the info, Gary...yep, still wheelin' around lookin' for the
big'uns ;-) I'll check on BPS...but at this point, what with this amazing
early thaw, I'm leaning towards cleaning them myself. Unfortunately, I
can easily imagine me dragging myself around on the floor with a flashlight

Lon,
Been there ... done that!
I clean my reels every year about this time by totally breaking them down,
degreasing and lubricating them. I've also lost my share of springs, C-clips,
etc. which is really frustrating. I then took a couple of old white bed sheets
and spread one out on the floor and one on the table. Now, if a spring or
small part falls on the sheet, it doesn't bounce and is easily visible. You
still need to exercise some care in removing and installing the springs and
clips to prevent them from flying off into deep space, but if you "contain"
them, they'll usually fall on the sheets and can be retrieved.
Good luck!

| I only used BPS once - or Metropolitan Rod and Reel I thnk is what they
call the repair service. Was extremely slow - months - and very
expensive, could have almost bought a new reel - and reel dies the next
season. Needless to say I was not pleased.
I have been pleased with Buckos for repair.
I do the cleaning/maitenance myself, but typically don't break them
down 100%.

I like the "between the sheets" idea (and the side comments ;-) )...and will
surely use that technique at some point.
However, Granite State Rod and Reel is just down the road from where I work
so I've dropped my reels off there. Turns out I've meet Joe before and he
told me about his shop...it just totally slipped my mind (as in what mind!).
I'll report back here when I know how they came out. Should be about 2
weeks...he's had a glut of reel cleaning/repair work recently...must be the
signs of an early thaw.
Thanks again for the tips and info,
Lon

Okay, I gave Joe at Granite State Rod and Reel 3 reels: 2 Shimano spinners and
1 Diawa baitcaster. The Diawa was in sore need of attention...the gears
occassionally wouldn't engage. The Shimanos were okay but were grinding some
sand inside.
They all seem to work beautifully now...and all for $26...well worth it, in
my opinion.
One thumbs up for Joe at Granite State Rod and Reel.
