I have been dreaming of going Peacock Bass fishing in Venezuela for several years. I sent away for a brochure describing the details and it just arrived in the mail yesterday! The pictures and descriptions are even better than I had imagined. I won't actually go until I can pay for the trip out of the profits of my outside consulting business. The way things are going, that should be sometime this Summer. Has anyone of you guys ever been on one of these trips? If yes, please describe the experience. If anyone wants information or specific details on the how to, etc. let me know. By the way, the larger Peacock Bass average 25 lbs. and the smaller ones average 10 lbs.....WOW!!! Bob (Stuck in ICEland)tm

A largemouth with feathers, of course... 8^) A peacock bass is a colorful cousin to the largemouth. It's a native of south america. There are a few varieties. Some have colorful stripes and/or spots. Some have knobby heads. They are also much larger and 10lbers are fairly commonplace. Watch the Jimmy Houston show on ESPN a few weeks on a row and you'll probably see some. They have been stocked in some of the canals in southern florida on an experimental basis. Haven't heard many positive results yet. -donmac

Just to second what Don has said about Jimmy Houston's show. Last Saturday he had a Peacock bass show on ESPN. Jimmy's show is on every saturday at 9:00 A.M. on ESPN. As far as the bass in Florida are I read an article and have seen ads for peacock bass fishing in Florida. It is strickly catch and release and a large fine for any violations. The state record is currently around 7lbs. This article was for the St John's river.

One thing they down play is the size of the mosquitoes down there. The boats can be different shapes also, which gets you into a different type of fishing. It is really refreshing to kind of turn back the clock. Depending on where you go and what equipment they use, you can have a ball. Instead of the Bass Boats up here with the flat decks and sit-high seats, their boats are more in the style of a boston whaler where you sit down in the boat and then stand up to land.(again, depends on their gear.) Food can be quite different also, depending on how far you are from a city. Country fair tends to have a lot of starch and vegetables prepared from scratch. Takes longer, but delicious. Toss in a few fish in the mix, and you can get hooked.(I would take along some Pepto etc. if you going into the back country and haven't done this before.) Remember, Jimmy Houston is sponsored and probably is going first class. I would go to fish, but also try and have fun doing it without the star treatment. Let us know if you go. I would love to hear about a complete trip fro planning to the results. Good luck Jim |
