| Kelly,
I went fishing last Saturday at Whitehall in Hopkinton. We caught a
couple of pickerel,an 18" and 12".This local fisherman, who lives up the
road from the lake show up about 4 hours and 15 holes after us he
ended up fishing with us for the day.Wouldn't you know it,he drilled 3
holes,20 ft. from shore, got two of his three tip-ups in the water and
BANG!!!! his first flag goes up,it had to be only about 15-30 min.after
he got there.Here's the killer,he pulled out a 37",18lb PIKE !!!! you
talk about luck,he set up about 10 ft closer to shore than we did and
right in front of us.We got pictures of it for proof.
Some people have all the luck.....

That must have been a fat fish! only 37" and 18 lbs. I caught a fish a

Keg,
Yeah, your're right well, close anyway. An older man came down to the
lake not knowing how to ice fish and Frank (without even knowing it)
coached him about where to set up, how etc. flag went up and it WAS a
pike then once again Frank coached him every step of the way (he's good
at that, right Keg) and he landed.....but the sad thing was HE KEPT IT!
I also heard there was another one caught about that size the same week
and that was KEPT also.
Soooooo Keg, shall I sicken you NOW by this weekends catch or should I
wait tomorrow and give you at least one full day of work under your
belt after your week of .......
was it called ice fishing?
Kel
p.s. for those of you who don't know who Frank is - he's my fiancee who
conviently has most of the winter off to enter derby's and frantically fish
for Pike so I will probably be telling you more of what he caught than
what I caught seeing he is out ther 7 out or 7.

| o.k. Keg, I will spare you -- but just for today.....I tell tomorrow
about a "good catch"
Speaking of driving to your tilts.....
Did any of you hear about what happened yesterday on Webster Lake. I
was out in Oxford visiting my parents for the weekend and decided to
fish Webster Lake but didn't arrive until about noon. Took my younger
brother with me and when we got the spot we were going to fish I told
me brother not to go "over there" at all! because it wasn't safe (just
about a 10 ft area on the WHOLE lake, rest was about 5 inches) so we
started setting up and I looked over and saw a 3 wheeler heading toward
us....I said "hey guys look at them" next thing ya know CLURPLUNK!
Right in that soft spot.....this was NOT Funny because it WASN't knee
deep....I only saw one head come out of the water when I knew there
were two. Then the head was gone again......he went back under to find
his little girl. Finally came back up and we were there but she was
unconscious and the father was panicing. I was talking to him calming
him down telling him we would help as he kept pushing himself off the
bottom (about 8 ft) and up to the hole again to keep his daughter
afloat. We told him to toss her on his next jump and he did....but not
on the safe part...it was very thin and she WAS NOT conscious. I got
very scared because I all set to do CPR on this child hoping to revive
her. Frank's fingers were almost touching hers but he was struggling so I
told him to grab her arm very quickly and slide her fast across the ice
and he did.....as soon as he put his hand on her she came to....whining
but still in shock. The a few guys made a train of hands and feet
ajoining to pull the father out.....in the meantime the ambulance still
wasn't there. We get the little girl stripped and covered in warm
stuff but she was all differnt colors and her dad was starting to
freeze like and icicle. The cops etc came and I ran to shore to tell
them what's going on and to guide them on the ice..... but they
wouldn't step foot on it -- he said "We called the hovercraft (sp?)" in
from Worcester. Well, took another half hour for them to get there.
Then the finally got taken to the hospital. What an experience, it was
very scary!

you know CPR in case they needed it. I was pretty underwhelmed by the
cops' actions (Per usual). I gotta believe that accidents like this
happen (Unfortunately) a lot in this area, and if all they can do is
call a hovercraft and hope it gets there in time to recover a body
(Because you don't last long in water that cold), shame on them ! I'm
not saying they should go out on thin ice and compound the problem, but

I grew up near lots of water for skating, and every one of us
knew to look for a ladder if someone went through.
Most of the Webster Lake shorefront has a house nearby. It never
crossed the officer's mind to check these houses for a ladder? Or
call the fire dept. to bring one? It's hard to believe the closest
help is a hovercraft that's 1/2 hour away. In fact, in most areas
a call for someone through the ice would automatically bring a response
from the fire dept. Maybe the dispatcher also has some explaining to
do. In any case, someone should be fired if this is really how things
occured.

Back to the topic!
Two days of ice fishing in southern NH produced several pickerel, two
perch (good sized) and one 2lb bass. A total of 20 fish pulled up, all
went back in...
The real fun was watching the flags from the sunroom in the cottage we
were in with binoculars. Run outside, jump in the jeep parked next to
the dock and drive off to the flag (doing donuts on the way back).

When ice forms on Lakes and ponds it tends to shift with the
weight of the ice and rising and falling of water making large cracks
in the ice that buckle together forming "safety cracks" this also
happens when ewe are walking along but not to the extent of the

Also I'd be careful about driving on Newfound, average ice depth is

Marty,
Any day I'm out fishing is a great day. This was Sat & Sun.
and I actually got just enough fish for two couples that are good
fish eaters, so it was just perfect. The smelt have all been eaten and
we've got just enough perch left for one more meal.
Two places I fish salmon regularly are miles apart....one
North of the Sandbar and one more located around where I hunt ducks
in open lake. I hope you don't mind if I don't get more specific
here in the files.
If we can keep the protesters from blocking the lampricide
applications program, then our fish will succeed. They've already
killed hundreds of thousands of lampreys in the applications already.
When we will see an increase in the salmon population is a question
I can't answer. I've caught (and released the majority of) about 35
salmon in the past 3 years and haven't found one that had been hit
by lampreys, although I'm sure that they get there share of attacks
much like the Lake Trout. Lake trout I've caught have mostly had
been hit by the lampreys.
One of my concerns along with everything else is what effect the
increase of salmon and laker population will have on the smelt
population as this will directly effect an already dwindled walleye
population as the smelt is a natural forage for walleyes.
Could get hairy!

118.24 | first laker of the year | WAHOO::LEVESQUE | Everything's better when wet! | Mon Feb 17 1992 09:15 | 54 |
| Fished two spots on saturday; one on Winnisquam, one on Newfound.
Arrived at Winnisquam about 8:40. Had baits in the water before 9:00 am.
Nada. Met some nice people (I was fishing alone) who shared their bob house,
hot dogs, and stories. The owner of the bobhouse, Bruce, picked up a 17.25"
laker (a short) right off the bat. He was using a large bucktail jig (red
and yellow) tipped with a piece of sucker. He got a few more hits but no more
fish. And no flags. He was in about 60 feet of water. His tip ups had chucks
of sucker on them; fished right on the bottom.
I was using smelt. One tip up was right along the drop off in about 15
feet of water. The other was in about 60 (at first) then 80 feet of water.
I did not get a single flag. At 12:45, I decided to go to Newfound. There was
about 15-18" of ice where I was fishing, though there were some open spots
under Mosquito bridge and in the southern side of the lake. These guys tell me
that there are quite a few short lakers in this lake.
So I went up to Newfound, to check on the bobhouse and fish for a short while.
Several of my smelt had hookmarks in them (I bought a half dozen in the morning)
so I figured I may as well use only fresh ones. After I made the first hole
through about 18-22" of ice, I dropped the previously hooked smelt through the
hole (3 of them.) I sounded for bottom, and put a smelt down there (15-18 feet
of water.) Chopped another hole in about 8 feet of water, and put a smelt down
that hole as well.
Decided to go around the island and see if Dave was at his bobhouse. Beer in
hand, I set off on this 5 minute jaunt. After noticing he wasn't at his
bobhouse, I cut acorss the island, making a pit stop in the process. Then I
saw a kid from the next bobhouse over running towards my bobhouse. I started
to come out of the woods, and the kid yells "Hey, you've got a flag over here!"
I ran over to the hole, and the line was not moving. I slowly picked up the
tip-up, and felt the line. I set the hook into nothing, and retrieved an empty
hook. The damn fish had taken quite a bit of line. I quickly rebaited, and
dropped the smelt down the hole (without sounding again; this was the trap that
didn't have a button on the line). When it was near where I figured bottom was,
I put the line down and picked up the trap to wind the remaining 50 feet or so
of line back onto the reel. I was about halfway through this when the line
started to disappear into the hole quickly. Like a dummy, I didn't wait for
the line to stop, but immediately grabbed the line and set the hook. Fish on!
Feels good, too! I pulled the fish up, and saw it was a laker as it went
past the hole. I got him up the hole, and as I tried to pull him onto the ice
the hook pulled free! He fell back into the hole. I practically dove into
the hole after her. Fortunately the hole wasn't big enough for her to turn
around, and I grabbed her and tossed her onto the ice. Meanwhile, the
characters at the next bobhouse are howling with laughter at my Keystone Cops
like antics. But I had a keeper and they didn't, so... :-)
The fish was just over 20". Nice fish. Female, with small egg sacks.
Post-mortem showed several smelt in the belly, plus what looked to be pieces
of sucker. About three pounds or so I'd guess. Set to be supper for tonight.
I may be forced to take a vacation day this week to try for another. :-)

Yes, an 18+ lb., 36" laker was caught Saturday out of Winnie (no tag).
It set a new record for the Derby. As of Saturday, there was just ONE
tagged fish on the board... a .88 lb rainbow (yup, less than 1 pound!).
You can bet that guy was a little psyched and probably didn't sleep a wink
Saturday nite!
Winning fish was a 4.82 lb, 22" tagged laker that took grand prize of 18' Four
Winds boat, 120hp Evenrude & trailer valued at $18,400. The .88 lb trout took
$2000 dollars. The 18 lb laker was only worth $500 while a 7.4 lb. cusk won
$1000. Tough to figure, huh?
We caught and released a nice 5 lb salmon on Saturday. Had a couple of flags
on Sunday but they hit and ran. Despite the cold weather, it was quite
tolerable out there since the wind wasn't blowing like last year.
OK...the Winnie Derby is over. BRING ON THE WARMTH AND SCREW THIS STIFF

I went out ice fishing yesterday during the snow flurries. We
still had 20 or so inches of soft ice in Westboro.
I ran across something unusual. I think the pond was dead
below 2 feet down from the ice's lower reach. Everytime I put a shiner
more that 2 feet from the spool I'd pick up a dead shiner 15 minutes
later. My theory was that the pond had no oxygen below that 2 feet of
water.
Has anyone had any simliar experience? I should add that the
pond has no inlets or outlets. It is normally good fishing.
Comments?
Bill.

Hi Bill
Whats the name of this pond? If you don't know, how about a
location? Others may or may not have had the same problem.

I call it "The Mudhole". It is a small one acre pond beside
Westboro Resevior. I'm pretty sure that no readers of this file have
ever fished it. My question was more related to generalities. Has
anyone ever seen a 10-12 foot deep pond where the only oxygen is in the
upper 2 feet? And: Do the fish survive? IE: Will the pond have fish in
it come summer?
Thanks,
Bill.

| Yes, ponds do die. A sad sight it is, too.
FWIW, the oxygen in a frozen body of water will be in the deeper areas
where the water most closely approximates 39.2 degrees F.
From the sound of it, the pond you were fishing would not support any
of the species that are most active in the winter. Species tolerant of
low oxygen tend to basically hibernate in the cold.

| I would like to start some discussions on ice fishing tech's.
I went out on a local lake last Sat., drilled three holes used two tip-ups
and a jigging pole and only caught a chill. I was hoping to catch a walleye
or some perch and was in a bay in about 10 ft of water. On one tip-up
I had a small sweedish-piple with a minnow and on the other a larger one
with a minnow. I was jigging with a chartruse jig.
Some people were using a snell hook with a minnow but how do you get
them down?
Need some help guys going out Sat. again.

| Gee, 10 feet of water seems awfully shallow. All the seriously cold
water is going to be at the top of the water column, and it's hard to
imagine that any warmwater species such as walleye or perch would be
comfortable in water that cold.
Do you all catch warmwater species through the ice in water that
shallow on a regular basis?

118.51 | Keep trying! | PSDV::SURRETTE | | Wed Feb 15 1995 11:43 | 32 |
| Hi Rick,
I'm sure where "local" is for you, but I'm assuming that
it's not New England (as there are very few Walleye in
any of the bodies around here).
I was out ice fishing last weekend, and had a pretty good
day. I almost exclusively use tipups when I ice fish,
mostly because I'm too lazy, and *someone* has to watch
the grill! We use shiners with snelled hooks. To get
the minnow down, we attach a split shot sinker above
the minnow approximately a foot from the hook.
Last Sunday, we caught a lot of perch and pickeral, and
one fugly eel (a first for ice fishing!). We fished from
4 to 12 feet, with small to medium sized shiners. We did
particularly well where there were the reminants of
green weedbeds. We kept the shiners as close to the
bottom as possible.
Although we never hooked into any bass, many bass were
taken (Mainly Largemouth, but at least one rogue smallie
was caught) reportedly in the same depth ranges. We did,
however, win the tournament with a 4.29 lb pickerel, and
if the tounament had a perch division, I probably could
have won that, as I managed a very fat, well over a pound
perch!
Hope this helps...

118.52 | sugar cube sinkers | TAMDNO::WHITMAN | I'm the NRA and I vote | Wed Feb 15 1995 12:46 | 16 |

One technique my father-in-law used was a sugarcube used as a temporary link
between the minnow and a small rock. Tie the cube to your line and a separate
line to a appropriately shaped stone (heck through the ice you could even keep
a long line attached to the rock so you could retrieve it.) Anyway, drop the
rig in the water, which will sink until the sugar cube melts at which time the
minnow is swimming free.
Actually he used this technique to cast his shiners "way the hell and gone"
out into the Wachusett Reservoir for lakers. That took the pressure of the
cast off the bait and provided a free (almost) swimming shiner waaaaayyyyyy out
there.

118.53 | A great day at the A1 | PSDV::SURRETTE | | Mon Feb 20 1995 08:53 | 33 |
|
Finally, an A1 day like I remember them!
I hit the A1 Site yesterday to fish a tournament that
the Green Water Wizards were holding. Of course the
weather was perfect, and there was a surprising amount
of ice, despite the few days of warm water. There was
at least 6 inches of black ice covered by an inch or
two of slush ice.
The best part was the fishing! The first two hours was
complete chaos, with flag going up faster than we could
rebait them. After that, another hour or two of pretty
steady action, and then it slowed. We did not get any
really big fish, with a 1.75lb bass being the largest,
but quantity made up for the lack of quality. We ended
up with 15 or so bass, mostly just keepers. It was good
enough to take 7 out of the 20 places listed in the
tourney, with 6th being the highest. No money, but we
got a couple dozen lures that were given for places
6 through 20.
Interestingly enough, not one pike or pickerel made it
to the scales.
Apparently, there was also a tournament there on Saturday,
with a pretty small number of fish weighed in. Overall,
Sunday was the better day.
