112.1 | From memory.... | USEM::PMARTIN | | Wed Jan 15 1992 12:40 | 13 |
| You'll need to register at the Registry of Motor Vehicles, Marine and
Recreation Vehicle Division. You'll need at least one USCG approved
flotation device per person.
I'm not sure about requirements for a 14 footer, but it's a good idea
to have a fire extinguisher, a spare oar/paddle, a bell, horn or other
sound warning device, and running lights/lantern/bright flashlight when
out after dusk.
BTW, a 7 1/2 horse is fairly big for a 14 foot boat so be cautious when
hole-shooting.

| I need some advice on how to register a boat in Mass that has
previously (last four years) been registered in New Hampshire???
Will I have to pay sales tax???? The boat is over four years old...
Who can I call??? I suppose are'll have to get that new sticker also??
Can anyone give me some assistance on where to get that also??? I heard
theres a six week waiting period for that sticker???? The boat is only
17'6" feet so it will be $25.00 for the sticker correct??? Also I'd
need to register the trailer for Mass too.... Any help will be greatly
appreciated.... Thank's in advance...

112.4 | I registered in Worcester | DELNI::OTA | | Tue Feb 11 1992 10:36 | 11 |
| Mike
I just registered my new boat with the Marine Recreational Vehicles
disviosn (not part of the registry). It cost $35.00 for a 2 year
sticker. I got the sticker right on the spot. My boats a Crawdad so I
assume your fee will be the same. I don't know about the sales tax.
For me I just had to show I paid the sales tax when I bought the boat.
I don't know where you live, in Worcester the place is at 75 Grove
Street and its in the same office as the Mass Tax Revenue department.

for tax and one for registration.

112.8 | 2 different stickers required | KOLFAX::WHITMAN | Acid Rain Burns my Bass | Wed Feb 12 1992 17:23 | 12 |
| I believe the last few may be referring to 2 different "stickers".
The MA registration sticker (or the registration sticker of some reciprocating
state) is required on all powered boats in MA. The USCG recreation fee sticker
is required on boats operating in USCG patrolled water (In MA that is salt water
and coastal rivers). The USCG sticker may take 6 weeks (I ordered mine by
phone and got it within a few days) and would cost $25 for boats between 16'
and 20'. If you aren't going to take your boat into USCG patrolled water you
don't have to worry about the USCG sticker, however you do need the MA
registration sticker and bow numbers regardless of where you operate you boat.

112.9 | CG numbering system | DONMAC::MACINTYRE | Terminal Angler | Thu Feb 13 1992 08:40 | 8 |
| Al, I believe the previous two replies are correct, and were not
referring to the new recreational fee/tax/sticker.
The numbering system that Mass uses (as do most states, now including NH)
is the coast guard numbering system which is reciprocal amongst all
states using the system.

| One little gotcha at the place in Worcester. Last time I registered a boat,
they wouldn't take cash. Something about not having a safe of decent type,
.... any way, they insisted on a check, where the auto registry won't take
(personal) checks.

I called in last fall for 91' and got it within a week.
I mailed in this year for 92' and got it in 4 weeks.
I'm attending a 13 week safe boating class in Auburn with the USCG
They said last year was the first year so the USCG was not really enforcing it.
This year they will enforce it if they stop your boat for an inspection etc.
Again you need this for all boat's "OVER" 16' and doing ocean work or navigable
waterway's such as all internal waters of the U.S. subject to tidal influence,
internal waters of the U.S. from which you can travel (by connecting waters,
canals, locks etc.) to tidal waters.

112.12 | Wheel bearing troubles... | LANDO::DEMARCO | Using Science To Stamp Out Defience | Mon Jun 29 1992 10:37 | 29 |
| This is kind of a miscellaneous question, and I know this isn't the
best note to ask it in, so please relocate if a more appropriate place
exists...
I just bought a 1979 Highlander Boat trailer and before I bring it home
I have to replace the bearings and races in the hubs. The outer
bearings were intact and I managed to get a number off them, but the
inner bearings were missing. I assumed the inner bearings would be the
same size as the outer and assembled the hubs with the same size inner
and outer bearings. Unfortunately, when I put the hub on the spindle, I
can't get the castle nut on because the inner and outer bearings are
about 1/2" too far apart (measured from the outside of the outer
bearing to the inside of the inner). This is when compared with the
available distance between the washer that presses against the outer
bearing, and the shoulder of the spindle, against which the inside of
the inner bearing sits. Also, note that the bearing races seem to be
seated properly.
So hear's my two questions:
- Do boat trailers typically have the same size inner and outer
wheel bearings?
- Does anyone know which city or town Highlander trailers are made
so that I could give them a call?
Thanks in advance,
-Stevie D

Does anyone know the address or maybe ever phone number of the Highlander

I can't pick up my boat till I get this wheel bearing problem straightened

If they have an 800 number you could call 800-555-1212
(800 # directory assistance). You might also try calling
some marinas. Someone would probably be able to help.

112.15 | What gives...? | SALEM::ALLORE | All I want is ONE shot..well maybe 2 | Wed Jul 22 1992 07:36 | 9 |
| If a boat is registered in Maine, can it be
operated in N.H. waters? I picked up a 12 ft. w/small
motor from my wife's grandmother and it is registered in
Maine. The reg/sticker says it is good until, I believe,
June of 93. So, I figured I was all set and would just use
that..............wrong. I got a ticket last night, $43.20
worth. I thought Maine, N.H. were reciprocal(sp), No?

I'd like an answer to the question raised in the previous reply as
well. Talking to the folks we rented a lakefront cabin from on Alton
Bay, we were told that NH was reciprocating with Maine.

112.17 | We'll see what happens...... | SALEM::ALLORE | All I want is ONE shot..well maybe 2 | Wed Jul 22 1992 09:43 | 14 |
| I called the N.H. Boating Division of the Fish
and Game. They said that you can operate the boat in N.H.
for 30 days. Then it must be brought back to Maine, even
if you just cross the border and come right back. You can
start the 30 days all over again. What a stupid law. I asked
her how the heck do they know how long you've been in N.H. with
the boat and her comment was, "That's why we have enforcement
out there sir."
The two mistakes I made were; I didn't have the new
sticker on and I said I owned the boat. But, I can beat this
one in court because the boat IS legal to operate in N.H. waters
because it IS registered, but in my wife's grandmothers name.
So, as far as I'm concerned, she's the legal owner of the boat
again...........

Call the Flagler County "tag" office for instructions. As I recall I walked
into the Lee County Admin building and took care of everything in one shot.
They did want an imprint of my hull number (like a VIN for cars) from the metal
tag put on by the manufacturer so that might cause you some grief and I believe
they also wanted the title. Florida has a big problem with stolen boats.
Again, call the tag office in Flagler county and see how their tap-dance is
choreographed. The trailer was less of a problem.
