107.0. "Steelmania - Catch It !!" by MRKTNG::VARLEY () Mon Dec 30 1991 14:25

I thought I'd add a note for a few of you "Steelheaders" in this file.
Boomer and I and a few others recently returned from the Salmon River
in Pulaski, NY where we experienced (For us, at least) some
unbelievable steelhead fishing. In 2 days, our guys had over 50 fish
on, landing 20 and releasing all but a couple. Average weight was 8-9
lbs, and these fish were fresh out of the lake - enormously powerful.
Biggest one landed was over 13 lbs, and we lost 3 estimated at over 15.

This is the best steelhead run I've seen in 10 years, and it's still
going on. I talked to a pal who used to guide up there, and he said a
few days ago he "Lost count of how many he had on when he got to 35..."
Naturally, on New Year's Day, "The Boomer" and Yours truly, "The Skoal
    Bandit" are headin' North.

I made this trip to the same river last weekend. Fishing was poor.
I only saw one fish taken (Steelhead) both of the days I was there.
It seems the fishing is dependent on the power authority that controlls
the flow of water released into the river. The first day I was there
there was only 1/2 a gate opened. The prevented fish from making
it over some of the shallow aread of the river. The fish would hold
in the deeper spots and the water was clear and slow. This meant
the the fish on a whole were very wary. I was fly fishing. Tried
everything... qartering down stream casting... quartering upstream
casting... upstreaming casting... hugging the shoreline on outside
bends in the river letting the fly drift in the current. All of
the techniques didn't work. The only fish I saw was when I tied
on a black-bunny-leach and threw it into the water. The fly was
drifting on the surface as I waded into the river. When I looked
at the fly a Brown had surfaced to take a look at my fly (3..4lbs)
but when he saw me he went to the bottom. This was the only fish
I saw all weekend. Tried a host of fly patterns. (Egg patterns,
Green buts, Muddlers, etc.). The moral to this story is I plan to
go back again and get something. I loved the river. This is a great
effort of stocking and the prices were reasonable for lodging.

Unfortunately, I was out with the flu most of last week, so I just sent
Bruce a note off-line today that probably would have saved him a trip.
With these cold water temps, if they aren't running at least one gate
of water fairly frequently - DON'T GO !! Also, fly fishing at this time
of year in single and double gate conditions is your worst option. The
only fly guys that do anything at all in winter seem to concentrate on
tail-outs using "Glo-bugs" with split shot on the leader. The purists I
talked to said "It isn't really fly fishing." However, I saw this guy
hook 3 nice ones below the boat ramp of "The Ball Park Hole" in town.

My comical sidekick - "Boomer," - and NorthWoods Tom Coots are headin'
up to Pulaski to chase metalheads next week. Boomer called our pal "The
Whip," who lives near there - Skaneateles - and he said the river is
still loaded. Last week Whip got an 18 pounder and a 22 pounder ! You
don't have to go to Patagonia or New Zealand to catch BIG trout... Wish
    I could go...

In case y'all haven't figured itc out, mr. Geibell is a certified
"Steelunatic" also - in addition to the time he spends on "The Big O."
    NWTom can attest to this.

Guys either fish from a drift boat ($225 total for 2 guys for a 6-8 hr
drift) or from the bank. I've done both, but mostly fish the banks.
Pulaski is the place, and a call to Whitaker's (315) 298-6162 will get
you a place to stay and info on the fishing. MAKE SURE YOU ASK WHETHER
THEY"RE RUNNING WATER _ NO WATER, DON"T GO ! Drop me a note at
MRKTNG::VARLEY, or call me at 264-1866, and I'll give you all the info
you'll probably need. Pulaski is COLD this time of year, and the
fishing can be tough, but this year they have an exceptional run of
    fish.

    $225? Ouch!!!

You can buy a first rate Klackamas boat for $3K. You'd only have to
    use it 12 times.

      Brett,

I tried that approach with my wife and she didnt think it was too
awfull funny, wonder if haveing 2 boats has something to do with it?
there are only a few rivers that you need a drift boat on, the salmon
    river being one of them.

A word of warning to people again, if you are on the salmon river
and they blow the warning siren, get the heck away from the river, when
they open 2 or more gates the water comes up VERY FAST, there are
several people a year killed by that river, you have to respect it!!!!
and even more so now during the cold weather it doesnt take long to
succomb to cold water. and if you fall in along a stretch when nobody
is around you are in serious trouble.

I would also recomend to never fish this river alone, at least then
you would have someone close by to help you out of trouble or go for
help. there are some pretty dessolate spots along that river.

You know something, Lee, I've been reading you notes for years and I've
decided that you are perfect for the state of Washington. You ought to
think about coming out here. You know anything about UNIX?

    :-)

I have been thinking of a drift boat and it would be my second boat
too. I'm not sure how my wife feels about that. She wants me to trade
in our center console for a 21' walkaround cuddy ("we need a head!").
The thing that I think keeps me from buying a driftboat is where the
heck to put it!!! My truck is already out in the driveway.

    p.s. Where's my salmon plugs???
