For what it's worth.... Sunday 12/23/91 I saw three people ON THE
ICE at a small pond near my house in Holliston!!! This is not a great
risk as the pond is only about 3 ft. deep. I didn't have time to stop
and ask how thick the ice was but they were drilling holes and setting
    tip ups!!
This does NOT mean that ice is safe everywhere!!! PLEASE CHECK
CAREFULLY BEFORE GOING ON THE ICE!!!

My neighbor went up to Great Bay on Fri night. Nobody out smelting
yet, although there appeared to ne 4" of ice in spots. With the warmer
weather this week, I don't expect the conditions improve much before
    the holidays.

According to Steve's Sport Shop in Hooksett, NH, there is 4-5" of ice on
many of the smaller ponds and including the smaller coves on Newfound Lake
and Winnisquam. He had already sold 40+ dozen shiners yesterday, so it's
obvious that folks are venturing out onto the snaller ponds.

I'll head out this weekend.

Happy Holidays to all!

My neighbor drove up to Great Bay last night looking for ice.
People were smelting last night off of Rt 85 near Exeter. He'll
be up there tonight. Can't make it myself but hope to start the annual
Friday night trips next week, weather permitting.

104.7 Smelting!RATTLE::VAILLANCOURTMon Dec 30 1991 12:2816

I was Smelting friday on the Exeter/Oyster river, 4-5" of ice, not
enough to convince me to put my HILTON Smelt Shack... However we
    caught a handful of smelt/tommys.

There is 8 Shacks allready on the Exeter river near the boat ramp, it
seems the ice is thicker in that area.

Pray for subzero weather and don't forget to get your 1992 fishing

I went skiing at Gunstock in Gilford, NH this past friday and both
Winnisquam and Winni has skim ice in the coves (not safe). From the
top of the mountian it looked as though most of the lake was open

104.9Where to put on in Exeter?IMBACQ::BUZYNSKITue Dec 31 1991 07:3315

Where do you put your house on in Exeter? It wasn't clear to me, from
the signs at the ramp that it is allowed there.
Do people mess with the houses much there, being right in town?
Also, where can you buy bait in Exeter?

Does anyone know what the ice is like at Sawyer's?

I,ve got to get some house keeping done on my house and get it
    on the ice.

    Thanks

104.10Ice/Smelt/Bait InfoRATTLE::VAILLANCOURTTue Dec 31 1991 12:4229

You can put a Smelt Shanty on the Exeter river in town at the boat
ramp, and it is allowed. If you plan on parking there at night you
will need a permit that can be had at the Exeter town hall.

People don't often mess with your shanty and most of the time there
are other people fishing in the area. Don't leave anything in the
shanty of vaule. I keep my shanty closed up tight "out of sight -
    out of mind"...

You can buy bait in Exeter at one of the local stores about 1 mile
from the boat ramp. I don't remember the name of the store, but this
is how to get there. When leaving the boat ramp, go left and you will
see a platform is the middle of the road, bear right go up that road
about a mile or less the package store will be on your left and they
have a sign in the window "SEA WORMS"...

Sawyers has about 4" of ice and about 15 shantys on it. They said the
smelting has been spotty and theres plenty of white perch. I wonder if
    White Perch eat Smelt ?

Anyways I hope this helps John,

    Mike

There should be about six inches of ice there tomorrow, I will be
hopefully setting up my shanty on the Oyster river tomorrow if there
is six plus inches of ice.

    Don,

I have never caught a white perch fishing the Exeter river, however I
know that there catching white perch on the Lamprey near the mills and
    some at Sawyers place.

The bait place in Exeter off of 101 East, I take the Exeter Exit into
town like I would be heading to go fishing and at the Fire Station I
take a right until I more less come to main street in Exeter then take
a left and the store will be about 150 yards on the right...
I'm not sure of the names of the street, But if you know how to get to
the Exeter boat ramp the other directions may be easier...

    Have fun!

P.S. Has anyone ever fished BOW LAKE in N.H. ? If you did how was the
fishing and is there any trout?

104.16Putting on at sawyers this weekendLEVERS::BUZYNSKIThu Jan 02 1992 08:3919
Thanks Mike V. for the information. My wife and I took a ride to Exeter
and Newmarket yesterday. After re-reading the sign at the town ramp I
realized I had previously misread it. There must have been a total of
50+ houses on the river in Exeter from the ramp to about a mike down
stream. We stopped in and talked to Junior at Sawyer's and got
basically the same story as you gave as to what the catch has been.
They are catching some white perch in the 1 LB plus range
up by the treatment plant in Newmarket. I did not figure out how to get
    down in there yet.

I am taking my house up to Sawyers this Fri night. The ice is broken
up at the shore where you put on, so houses must be put on at near low
    tide.

I don't like the sound of the mild weather coming up for the rest of
the week and through the weekend.

Dilsworth and I were behind the treatment plant last night. 4-5" of

We only caught 25 or so, the same for my neighbor who was there as
    well.

104.18Thin ICE!RATTLE::VAILLANCOURTThu Jan 02 1992 16:2534
    Hi,

Glad to see you guys checked out the Smelting area and the Fishing
at the water treatment plant. I was fishing at the treatment plant
early yesterday afternoon, The fishing was lousy the worst I ever
seen. Its usually pretty good with a least something biting. I never
caught even one fish and out of maybe a dozen guys no one was moving
quick (I saw 4 fish caught at the peak of the incoming tide).

The ice on the other hand was very scary I would say on about 3 inches
where the good current is and maybe 4 inches on the sides. Some guys
are so crazy about smelting, I saw 5 guys at the plant in the middle
where two shantys are actually sinking slowing as water was 1 inch deep
    on the surface.

    Don,
I would like to talk to you
about BOW lake, I will call you when I get a chance.

The Exeter river has the most ice near the boat ramp, not sure if
    anyones catching fish?

They do have bait at the store in town (Exeter)

John, Unless you plan on Baby sitting your shack daily, I don't
    recommend setting up just yet.

I called Sawyers and they said that the ice is not so hot, although
there were folks out fishing. They said 3-4 inches. Wednesday's
4-5 inches was fine, but any less than that becomes questionable.
    We've cancelled tonights trip.

104.20Ice is out at Sawyer'sSASE::BUZYNSKIMon Jan 06 1992 08:4324
We went up to Sawyers Fir night and caught 3. There were about 4 other
houses being fished with about the same success accept for one that had
about a dozen. There was about 3 inches of good ice under about an inch
    or so of snow ice.

I went up yesterday (Sunday) to pull my house off and Junior had just
finished pulling all of the houses. Good thing he did because we were
too late to be able to get out on the ice due to the extra high tide.
The ice was disappearing fast. The channel was opened up and the rest
was breaking up. One house was through the ice Fri night and was still
showing its roof yesterday. Another house was way out in the bay
submurged. I doubt there is any ice left there today.

Most of the houses had to be pulled through the water for the last
20 to 30 feet from shore. Some of the lighter ones were floated across
    on an iceburg.

It certainly is nice to have someone looking out for your house
when things get touchy. Junior only charges $3 for the service of
pulling your house and does it automatically when necessary. I told him
to call if he ever needed help in the future.

My neighbor went up to the treatment plant on Fri night and Sunday.
Friday he had about 3" of ice and yesterday he had about 1.5" by the
channel. He's nuts, but he gave me a drywall bucket full of white
perch last night... He said he could have filled up 3 buckets each
    time up.

104.22WAHOO::LEVESQUEA Day at the RacesMon Jan 13 1992 09:3923
Went to Newfound Lake this weekend.

The vast majority of the lake is open. Only the coves have any ice. The south
cove by Wellington Beach has about 10-12" of ice. The cove at the north of the
lake just past the marina has about 6-8" of ice, with only 3" or so in the
newly iced section. The newly iced section is clearly delineated from the
older ice by a snowline and different color. A bobhouse began to sink into the
new ice yesterday, causing a few anxious moments. :-)

I saw only one decent fish yesterday, a gorgeous rainbow of about 18".
Absolutely beautiful colors, and large spots. "Like a picture in a magazine."
He was caught on a salmon egg in about 10 feet of water (sandy bottom).

I had the only flag from our group. The fish was not hooked; it only took
about 5 feet of line before dropping the bait. A few teethmarks in the side of
the smelt were as close as I came. :-)

Temp was about 20 yesterday, a damn sight more comfortable than saturday.
saturday morning had temps of about 10 and winds a solid 25-30 knots. Without
a bobhouse, that made for some brutal conditions. We only stayed for a couple of
hours before hastily retreating.

104.23Iceing rate?EMDS::PETERSONFri Jan 17 1992 14:0115

After seeing the ice come and go and.... on the Mill pond, a
question on Ice Build-up Rates popped into my head. I saeem to
remember years ago hearing something along the lines of '..It's 10 deg.
out tonight, that means that ice will be building up at the rate of
    ( ) inches each hour..'

Does anyone know if there is a 'rule of thumb' regarding ice build

I'm really surprised at how much the ice conditions seem to vary. With all
the cold weather we've had, I would expect that all the smaller ponds and
lakes in MASS would be real solid.

Let's hope this week remains cold to help improve the ice on Winnie for the
upcoming derby. I'd hate to see the event spoiled by having some fools
drive through thin ice.

There are a number of things that affect ice conditions on a body of
freshwater. The two most common are current and chemistry. Currents are
common in what we think of as standing water, especially in those ponds
and lakes with inlets and outlets (many of which are underground and so
not detectable). If you see a water outtake for a municipal water
supply at one end of a pond, you can bet there are some places where
the ice is particularly thin. You won't know where those places are
unless you happen to know the flow of the current in that pond. (It
seldom runs right down the middle.)

There is a current that runs at a little over a knot in Winnipesaukee
off Borrin Point of Birch Island, for example, that seems completely
inexplicable. Since the current only exists (as far as I have seen)
between 30 and 40 feet, it wouldn't have much effect on ice thickness.
I mention it only as an example of currents in freshwater.

Water chemistry is another reason some ice would be less reliably
thick. *Many* of the lakes and ponds of Massachusetts have been so
thoroughly polluted that, in spring and summer, one can *see* the
chemical stratification, which does not correspond to thermal
stratification. Since chemical poisoning of the water tends to
concentrate in certain areas of a lake or pond, I would expect those
areas to have thinner ice cover. I don't think there is any way to know
where the thin ice is in such situtations, even if you know what the
    currents are.

This winter has been very mild and I suppose it's possible a new
record could be set this year. I have a Lake Winnie ice-out chart
on the wall in my office, which goes back to 1851. Earliest ice-out
on record, was March 28 in 1921. In the last 140 years, last year's
date of April 8 has only been beaten 12 times. Average appears to
be around April 15-16. Latest was May 12, which occured in 1888 and

I fished Alton bay yesterday. I dropped my only hit of the day (I only got
to fish for about 3 hours.)

No ice was in sight (though I didn't venture very far out.)

Saw only a few fish taken, but one was a prize. A salmon that definitely
weighed more than 10 lbs. It was massive. I thought I was at the Big O.
Caught on a smelt. It had a couple of flies in it's mouth already. Big fish.

There was still a little ice on Dublin Lake last friday, but it may be gone by

Moosehead's in the vicinity, and the same may be true there. Rumor has
it that Schoodic Lake is one of the last to get ice and one of the last
to lose ice in Maine. It could be that the ice is already off
    Moosehead.

Given the warm weather over the past few days and the fact that there is
STILL open water on Winnie, I expect that there will be some mighty
crowded conditions at the Winnie Derby in 2 weeks. There's not a lot of

shorelines will be mobbed.

Who is planning to go? Heard any recent ice condition reports?

As of last weekend, twelve large objects have gone through the ice on
Meredith Bay. The smallest was a snowmobile, and the largest was a
Winnebago. There were a bunch of ice sheds on the ice on Saturday, but
words of caution were flowing all through the neighboring towns. Locals
are being *very* cautious about ice skating anywhere in the area
(Meredith, Center Harbor, Moultonborough, Sandwich, etc.)
because ice all over has been unpredictable at best. There is one diver
in the area whose been making a better-than-usual living this winter
going through the ice in search of cars, trucks, and snowmobiles.

Nubanusit Lake had ~12" of ice on it in the area where we put the bobhouse
last sunday.

We didn't catch any trout (only 1 flag, and it stole my bait.) My buddy
did jig up three yellow perch ~10" in about 15 minutes, though.

And we saw one nice fat rainbow caught when we first got there. It was
about an 18" long hen; she was fat and full of roe. Pretty fish. Shallow
water, ~15 feet from shore with a salmon egg.
104.66It's definitely spotty2858::LAVASHSame as it ever was...Wed Feb 03 1993 14:0321
I was up on Newfound this weekend. Put my bobhouse out sunday.
The ice was definitely spotty. There were only 2 other bobhouses
on the cove. There were a number of pressure ridges and fissures.

We dropped the bobhouse in close to shore and are planning on moving it
out a little further this weekend. The ice was very upredictable, and
the 8 inches of snow they got Sunday hid a lot of weak ice. That same
snow will insulate the lake and reduce the effectiveness of this last
    cold snap some.

I saw some spots with 12 inches of ice, and some spots that were wet...

Yet on the southern end of the lake there were cars and trucks on the
    lake.

After a close call with some thin ice last year, I playing it extra safe
this year. I'd advise everyone else to be cautious this year, from what
I saw this last weekend, you could be going swimming if you start
bringing vehicles out on the ice.

I was at Comet yesterday 4/15 during lunch, ice looked thick except for

    at that time no luck.

I would think with the nice warm weather today it should be ok for

104.77How does ice-out happen?XANADU::red911.zko.dec.com::xanadu::cummingsJerry Cummings, TeamLinksWed Mar 27 1996 14:2911
What exactly is the process for ice-out? Looking at a body
of water, I'll see some beginning arounds the inlets or
outlets for a number of days with no dramatic changes, and
then suddenly one day, the ice is gone. Why isn't it more
gradual? Is the ice simply melting, like an ice cube on a
table or are other processes at work?

Thanks,
Jerry

104.78WAHOO::LEVESQUEcontents under pressureWed Mar 27 1996 15:265
It is gradual until the end. The ice gets thinner and thinner, and by
going through a series of thaw/refreeze cycles it becomes more porous.
Once it starts to open up, it becomes subjected to the ice-breaking
effects of the wind. That's what really accelerates the process- the
    wind and increased sunlight.
