102.0. "Need Help Starting Out" by BRUTUS::KNIGHT () Wed Dec 18 1991 13:28

    I've been away from the fishing scene for about 11 years now. During
    that time I've been running/managing a baseball program in Framingham.
    Now that I've retired from the baseball wars, over the past few months
    I've dusted off the rods & reels and am anxiously looking forward to
    getting my license and spending time doing some fresh water fishing
    beginning in the spring. Here's where I need some help. I don't have a
    boat so the majority of my fishing is going to be from the banks of the
    lake/river/pond/stream. Living in Framingham, I wouldn't want to have to
    commute more than an hour to get to any one spot. This would probably
    go west to Worcester, Fitchburg/Leominster, or the south shore,
    although I will plan a trip to the Quabbin sometime next year. Would
    anyone know of some fishing spots where bass/pickerel are accessible
    from the shore? And one day I'll get a boat so I can go after the rest
    of the fish. Any thoughts/suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

    Check out the Sudbury Res. in Marlboro. No boats are allowed in there
    and there are some BIG bass cruising that lake - Last year I saw one
    that I would estimate at 7+ lbs (spooked her before I could cast
    though).

    Ditto, to the Sudbury Res.,"The Met", but make sure your in Marlboro
    The Sudbury Res. runs through several towns including Framingham.
    But your only allowed to fish it in Marlboro.

    Another place that comes to mind is Hopkington State Park.
    Take 85 south off of rt.9. Go past the gate and you can fish along
    the side, or continue up the road and take your next left. This
    will bring you out to a cove.

    Hopkington is stocked with trout in the spring but I've caught some
    good bass in there too. Never got a pickeral out of there though.

    One last place around there is lake Cotituate "NOT SURE OF THE
    SPELLING" but it also has good trout and bass fishing.
    And if you get a boat, you might score a salmon or two.
    Take rt9 east to rt30 east towards Wayland.

                              GOOD LUCK!!!
                                                    Scott.

    RE:3
    My brother said he got two salmon trolling streamers in lake urine
    two years ago.

    And I've caught large mouth bass there as recent as last summer.
    Never small though.

    I'm a catch and release man, myself.
    And after hearing your review of the place I'm glad!

102.5# of my favorite spotsGRANPA::TMARTINTue Jan 14 1992 11:1232
    CLINT,

    I used to live in the Framingham Area and the spots I used to hit from
    the shore are:

    		Wachusetts - Can be tough to fish sometimes but there are
    			     some huge fish there especially smallmouth
    			     bass. On rte 70 there is a large cove at the
    			     bottom of a steep incline (I don't remember
    			     which gate it is) I've hooked a couple of
    			     huge smallies there (one close to 7 lbs).

    		Sudbury Res Caught my largest bass ever here (6lbs) and
    			     have heard numerous fish stories about the
    			     ones that got away. There's a cove in
    			     Marlboro that's on the back road that goes to
    			     Framingham (comes out to Edmunds RD) If you
    			     down Broadmeadow RD in Marlboro past the big
    			     APT complex (Windsor Meadows) there's a right
    			     turn that gives you access to the cove.

    		Fort Meadow Caught some nice bass in this res. off of the
    			     causway where the water goes under the road.
    			     Bass, Piceral and Crappies reside here.

    Now I'm living in fished out Maryland longing for some of my old spots

    Good Luck

    Thomas

    Thanks for all the suggestions. Have got the license and am ready to
    go. Someone at work mentioned the Ashland Reservoir and how he had
    caught a bass that must have weighed 7-8lbs...said he caught it with
    a rooster tail. Have you heard anything about this reservoir?

    Again, I really appreciate the help...

102.7In need of New Hampshire info !!!RUNTUF::MAGEEThu Mar 19 1992 23:1619

       I have only been a New Hampshire resident for a relatively
    short time and need some questions answered.

       I picked up my N.H. fishing licence but did not get any info
    telling me when the fishing season opens!

    When does trout season start?

    When can I go bass fishing, (my favorite)!

    Where and how do I register my poor mans plastic bass boat.
    (It's embarrassing but it is flotation!)

    Any other hints or facts that can be shared with me would
    be appreciated.

102.8know the rules, or face big fines$$$SALEM::JUNGhalf day?->Fri Mar 20 1992 07:2913
    You should go back to where you bought your fishing license and
    get a rule book.

    I don't think there is enough disk space to cover the rules, much less
    the changes.

    Every species has its own rules. These rules can change from month to
    month, or from one body of water to another....and, er...um, well you
    just got to get that book!

 Trout season is open now in most rivers and streams. It will open in the
trout ponds on April 25th.

 Bass season can be caught year 'round, but are subject to differing
restrictions based on the time of year.

 Definitely get yourself a rule book for details. Note that a number of
bodies of water have additional restrictions; check the rules that apply
to the body of water where you plan on fishing.
102.10nh rules questionSMURF::AMATOJoe AmatoFri Mar 20 1992 09:2111
    Mod, this may not belong here but thought I'ld ask.

    When I picked up my freshwater license this jan, nobody had any rule
    books. I didn't think that too much would've changed, but I guess I'm
    wrong. I read an article in thursday's useless leader that said
    trolling for lake trout is NOT allowed anymore in NH!? Anybody got a
    rule book to verify this one?

    Thanks
    Joe

102.11Helpful for N.H.WMOIS::BOURGAULT_DFri Mar 20 1992 12:0910
    Chet, one thing you can get to make life easier for you in N.H. is
    to purchase a Clark's book. This gives you information on lakes
    launches, and what fish are the prevalent specie. You can purchase one
    at Zylas's or Northern Bass Supply in Brentwood. If you need further
    info on it or directions to get to one on these places ask you'll
    get all the info you need and don't need.

    Regards

102.12We're talking about N.H., right?SALEM::JUNGhalf day?->Sat Mar 21 1992 09:0210

    I just went through the rule book, particularly the sections "Limits and
    Methods of Taking for Particular Species", "Prohibited Actions", "Pert-
    inent Laws and Rules" and "Specific Rules for Ponds and Lakes" and
    found no information concerning the taking of any species by means of
    trolling.

	Take a look at the letter code references for tables. LT-1, LT-2,
	and LT-3 all have it as the last sentence in section A. It looks
	like it only pertains to fishing from ice-in to March 31, though.

	"Lake trout shall not be taken by trolling."
102.14????????????????????????????????SALEM::JUNGhalf day?->Tue Mar 24 1992 07:317
    I found it. But I don't get it. Is this section (A) limited from
    ice-in to March 31. If so, I don't imagine they get to many offenders
    seeings that ice-out is *usually* in March or April. Why have such a
    rule?

102.15wording could be alot better!SOLVIT::MOLLOYMon Mar 30 1992 13:136
    My understanding of the rule is: from ice-in to March 31, no trolling
    for lake trout (some lakes don't freeze completely and they don't want
    trolling in the open water).

102.16N.H. beginner - tips?CASDOC::ROCHESTERTue May 19 1992 16:5515
    I did some fishing as a kid, and some great ocean fishing 15 years
    back, but am really a beginner when it comes to freshwater fishing.
    I'd appreciate equipment, technique, and location tips of all sorts.
    I expect to be fishing N.H. lakeshores/streams, as I got no float.

    Anybody that's got the patience to bring a beginner along, I could at
    least supply some fine ales, stouts, and porters -- fresh homebrew.

    thanks, and good fishing,
