99.0. "Gulf of Mexico / Florida Panhandle" by TOOK::SWIST (Jim Swist LKG2-2/T2 DTN 226-7102) Thu Dec 12 1991 08:33

I'm going to visit some relatives in Destin, FL this February. Best
I can figure this is on the North Coast of the Gulf of Mexico - nearest
    big city is Pensacola.

What kind of fishing can I expect down there? Will there be charters
or party boats available? What, is anything is "hot" there that time
    of year?

Destin is a decent fishing port. They hold a shark tournament there every
year, so I have no doubt that charters will be available. You probably would do
well to call the Chamber of Commerce to get info; if you happen to go there
during the tournament getting a charter will be difficult if not impossible.

Pensacola... Enjoy...

Destin is between Panama City and Pensacola. I was stationed near there
during my Air Force days (Tyndall AFB). Febuary will be cold.
Definitley not beach weather. The Pan Handle has a much different
climate then southern Florida....The beaches along this stretch
are probably some of the most beautiful whitesand stretches in the
world. You should be able to find plenty of fishing in the area.
The guy who lived next door to the house I was renting ran a charter
boat service. Both our places were on a canal that went out to the
gulf. I wasn't really into fishing saltwater at the time, and often
he'd cruise by in his big Bertram and call up to our lawn to see if
I wanted to go out with him for the day as he only had a couple of
people on the charter! I'd always say thanks anyways....boy, wish I
had that chance again. Anyways, we both had BIG boat docks in front
of our houses, and once in awhile I'd cast a line off it. I'd catch
flounder, speckled trout, and eels. There are also big fishing peers
scattered around you could fish from. I don't remember there being
much in Destin. The beach was pretty undeveloped (1976-79). I remember
some wild parties we'd have there! Dozens of us GIs would set up camp
hidden amongst the dunes on remote areas of the beach. We'd truck in
kegs of beer, a generator and a PV sound system, tents, food and any
cute young women we were dating at the time and have quite the time!
That was the life...Try the Panama City chamber of commerce for info.
Mexico beach was where I lived, but that's the wrong side of the Base
from destin...it's probably an hour or more ride...It seems there
should be some good bass fishing inland...lots of swamps and rivers...
    Good luck!
